Research Lab Technician
Be part of a dynamic and productive team, conducting cutting edge research that impacts and improves the health and well-being of our nation’s Veterans. Research Service is seeking a full-time research lab technician to join the team. The laboratory is located at the Providence VA Medical Center and is affiliated with Brown University. The laboratory utilizes both basic science and animal/preclinical models to test novel hypotheses. The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for carrying out laboratory experiments under the direction of the Principal Investigator. The technician will also provide care for all small animal species in accordance with standard operating procedures, to ensure a sanitary and safe environment for research animals.
Typical Duties:
- Husbandry of small rodents (cage changing, using cage washer, process clean cages, fill water bottles, etc.).
- Maintains animals and their environment according to Federal and AALAS standards.
- Perform assessments to determine (1) normal appearance, (2) changes in behavior, (3) presence of disease or abnormalities.
- Monitors cages and the premises for proper heat, light, humidity, air conditioning requirements.
- Assist in transport, loading or unloading cages, animals, supplies as needed.
- Maintains accurate records (animal care, supply and equipment inventory, animal census, etc.).
- Oversee breeding and reproduction according to protocol and supervisor direction.
- Perform laboratory experiments utilizing standard techniques and equipment.
- Process, organize, and summarize experimental data and present results.
- Manage and maintain experimental records.
- Assist in the design of laboratory experiments, techniques, and protocols.
- Responsible for processing lab supply orders and other administrative duties to support the biological science program, under the direction of the lab manager.
Requirements:
BA/BS preferably in a life science discipline
2-3 years experience in biomedical research or animal science preferred
Demonstrated abilities in lab techniques (immunoblotting, histology, PCR, genotyping, cell culture)
Proficiency in software applications such as Excel and Prism
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
