Signal Technician II Transportation

The City of Roanoke is currently seeking an energetic, dedicated team player to fill a vacant Signal Technician Level II position in our Public Works/ Transportation Division/ Traffic Signal Shop. Traffic Engineering Signal operation focuses on 24/7/365 maintenance, operation, and repair of the City's 157 traffic signals and emergency signals at Fire Stations, emergency vehicle preemption systems, and operation and maintenance of 23 school location zone flashers.   Additionally, the Signal Shop consists of six personnel responsible for maintaining all 792 city-owned streetlight fixtures, bridge lighting, and installation and replacement of holiday decorations and American flags (seasonally). The use of new technologies in vehicle detection and communication systems and new signal equipment is essential to our signal operations.

Examples of Duties

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Install, maintain, and repair traffic signal equipment, including controllers, cabinets, vehicle detection systems (e.g., loops, video, radar), pedestrian signals, and flashing beacons.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on intersections and components to ensure optimal function and compliance with MUTCD standards.
  • Erects poles, runs messenger cable, hangs overhead lights, and installs other devices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve signal malfunctions using test equipment, schematics, and software-based diagnostics.
  • Replaces electronic components.
  • Installs and maintains aerial and underground traffic signals and communication cables (including marking signal utilities for 811 dig tickets when necessary).
  • Respond to signal failures and emergencies on a rotating on-call basis.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports of work performed and materials used.
  • Assists in procuring routine materials and maintaining inventories.
  • Recommends and/or makes modifications to signal equipment upgrade and signal coordination system improvement.
  • Installs and maintains automated traffic signal control equipment and coordination systems.
  • Works with vendors on new signal technology developments for our current signal system improvements.
  • Inspects work in progress and on completion.
  • Verifies proper observance of safety precautions.
  • In the absence of a supervisor and team lead, directs activities of the division when authorized.
  • Assists traffic engineering staff in keeping traffic signal timing current and appropriately adjusted to meet the current traffic demands.
  • Assists contractors and utility companies during new construction.
  • Assists with signal installations meeting MUTCD standards.
  • Participates in the City of Roanoke snow removal operation.

 

Typical Qualifications

 

Qualifications:

A High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required, and supplemented by technical training in electrical and electronic engineering is a plus.

One to three years of related work experience and training in the construction and maintenance of electronic systems, traffic signal installation, and electrical system operations is required.

Must have a CDL (Class B) or obtain within twelve months of employment.

Must possess or obtain within two years of employment IMSA Traffic Signal Level I certification.

Must possess or obtain within four years of employment IMSA Traffic Signal Level II certification.

A valid app-Ability to perform repairs, installation, etc., from a bucket truck at heights of up to 40 ft.
