What type of work will I be doing?
As a summer intern for the Newport News Police Department, you will spend your time learning the facets of the public safety field.
On-the-job training will be provided and assigned tasks may require you to be out in the field at times, collecting data, or observing conditions.
The Newport News Police Department will accept 3 interns per semester for 2 semesters, for a total of 6 interns per calendar year.
How much does this internship pay and when do I start?
The pay rate for this position is $15/hour. NNPD Interns must commit to working a minimum of 120 hours. This program is designed to include an internship training period of no less than 10 weeks with no less than 12 hours worked per week.
The department’s Internship Program Coordinator will create a work schedule for each intern based on the department’s needs and the student’s availability.
Interns will be exposed to the duties performed in various units during the internship, to include recruiting, public information, crime center, investigations, record keeping, evidence, training and patrol.
The application periods typically take place the first half of March and the first half of September each year. The selected interns would begin the NNPD Internship Program the following semester.
The ideal participant would be in their 3rd or 4th year of a 4-year degree program at the time of application. At the program’s conclusion, participants will submit a written evaluation of the program to the Coordinator.
What are the qualifications for this position?
The internship requires effective communication skills, both verbal and written. The ability to work independently with strong situational awareness is vital for safety during fieldwork.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software is helpful.
A satisfactory criminal background check and
