Air Resources Engineer

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is recruiting an Air Resources Engineer to join its in-use compliance team. The In-Use Compliance Section ensures that passenger cars, vans, and pick-up trucks are complying with California's emission standards throughout the vehicles' lifetime. The primary responsibilities of the Air Resources Engineer will be to review emission test data submitted by vehicle manufacturers, to develop vehicle emission test plans and manage test projects that investigate possible noncompliance with emission standards, to evaluate if corrective actions and vehicle recalls are needed to address noncompliance issues, and provide technical support for in-use vehicle enforcement cases. In addition, the Air Resources Engineer will communicate with automakers to ensure timely submission of emission test data; coordinate testing projects with teammates, other CARB staff, manufactures, and other government agencies; and prepare spreadsheets, presentations, and technical reports to summarize vehicle test results. This position will report directly to the Air Resources Supervisor I.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required. 

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.

  • Requires being stationary, consistent with office work, for extended periods.
  • Standard office environment (artificial lighting, controlled temperature, etc.)  
  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
  • Safety footwear is needed for certain work conditions which includes vehicle emission testing and test lab inspections.
