Compensation:

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has an Advanced Disease Intervention Specialist opening in Dodge City. This position is non-supervisory.

Are you passionate about working within a diverse population? Join our team as an Advanced Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS). The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s (KDHE) Bureau for Disease Control & Prevention (BDCP) has several DIS positions vacant across the state. Disease Intervention Specialists have been the backbone of public health for decades. DIS in Kansas are public health professionals who use contact tracing and case investigation to prevent and control infectious diseases like Syphilis and HIV/AIDS. 

As a DIS, you should possess certain skills such as, problem-solving skills, negotiation skills, investigative skills, and the ability to communicate and perform within a diverse population. This position supports the values of public health in Kansas by protecting and improving the health and environment for all Kansans.

DIS Specialize in:

  • Public health investigations
  • Case management and analysis
  • Provider and community engagement
  • Outbreak detection and response.

 

Qualifications

Education:  

  • High School, GED

Licensing & Certification:

  • Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.     

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Two or more years of relevant work experience demonstrating the application of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities necessary for the position.
  • Two years of experience in public health work related to disease prevention, health education, or investigation.
  • Three years of other work experience providing client-centered service requiring advanced interpersonal skills and the ability to facilitate co-operation both among individuals and groups.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Biology, or other health-related field plus one year of relevant DIS experience may substitute for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of methods used to prevent and control the spread of communicable infections.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the use of computers and mobile devices for the collection of data.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally an in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain favorable interpersonal relationships with diverse populations.
  • Ability to collect, describe and analyze information to effectively solve problems, identify missing data.
  • Ability to act effectively in response to uncertainty, new information, or changed circumstances.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to conduct epidemiological field investigations.
  • One or more years of relevant work experience demonstrating the application of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities necessary for the position. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Biology, or other health-related field.
