Food Safety Specialist (Food Inspection Services) at Stark County Health Department
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the Unit Manager, takes responsibility for planning, developing, and administering the Food Safety & Inspection and School Environment Programs and any additional programs or projects assigned by the Food Program Coordinator, Unit Manager, Environmental Director, or the Health Commissioner. Consults with departmental specialists and the public in all aspects of Environmental Health.
- Assists in the coordination of all aspects of enforcement for the Food Program, School Environment/ Inspections Program, and related regulations with the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Works with government agencies to ensure that all required inspections are completed. Makes field inspections and field investigations to ensure that programs are being carried out in accordance with state and federal laws. Conducts foodborne illness investigations. Refines, develops, and carries out local rules and regulations.
- Review regulations, procedures, and policies governing the food program and make recommendations for necessary amendments. Reviews and comments on plans and operational procedures for county food service operations.
- Prepares Board of Health actions and court actions when necessary. Provides expert testimony in court for public health cases.
- Speaks before local business organizations, schools, township officials, and other interested groups. Participates in special events to further public awareness of health and environmental protection issues. Participates in the development of public education programs and related materials (e.g., pamphlets, brochures).
- Other tasks as requested or assigned by the Directors and/or Health Commissioner.
Minimum Education, Training, and/or Experience Needs:
- An Environmental Health Specialist-In-Training (E.H.S.I.T.), Registered Environmental Health Specialist (R.E.H.S.), or eligibility to become an E.H.S.I.T. or R.E.H.S. in the State of Ohio. A Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Food Science, Physical Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field. Preferred but not required: knowledge of food safety and sanitation, food processing quality control, the State of Ohio Uniform Food Safety Code, foodborne illness investigation, commercial water wells, semi-public sewage systems, and school building inspection.
- The ability to work with the public and promote environmental health and regulations within the community and industry. Must have the ability to recognize deficiencies in environmental health laws and cite those on an inspection form. Must have the ability to follow up on individual orders for compliance. Must have the ability to communicate and educate both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of program/project management. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Write complex reports and position papers. Gather, collate, and classify information about data, people, or things.
- Knowledge and ability to review and comprehend technical and operational plans.
- Knowledge of public relations and the ability to prepare and deliver speeches before specialized audiences and the general public.

Hours: 8:30-4:30 with some weekend and evening availability
Salary: Starting salary $38,813, builds based on experience
