Position Overview
The United Methodist Church of West Chester is seeking a dynamic and visionary Director of Music Ministries to lead and grow a vibrant, inclusive, and Christ-centered music program. This full-time position oversees music for both traditional and contemporary worship services and develops opportunities for people of all ages to engage in the musical life of the church.
We are looking for a creative, spiritually grounded leader who is passionate about worship, skilled in both choral and contemporary music, and eager to build new programs that reach more people and deepen our community’s connection with God.
Key Responsibilities
Worship Leadership
- Direct and rehearse the Chancel Choir for traditional worship.
- Lead weekly choir rehearsals (Thursday evenings) and coordinate music during summer.
- Lead and coordinate the Praise Team and Band for the contemporary service, including music selection, rehearsals, and volunteer development.
- Plan and provide music for special services (Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, etc.).
- Collaborate with clergy, staff, and lay leaders to create spiritually engaging worship experiences.
Program Development
- Build and lead a multigenerational music ministry, including:
- Children’s Choir (including weekly rehearsals and occasional performances)
- Youth music opportunities
- Intergenerational ensembles and instrumental groups
- Encourage spiritual growth and fellowship through music.
- Develop creative and visionary programs that engage the wider community and invite new participation.
Administration & Communication
- Oversee administrative aspects of the music ministry, including budgeting, scheduling, music ordering, and library organization.
- Recruit, train, and support choir members, praise band members, and music volunteers.
- Clearly communicate rehearsal schedules, events, and opportunities to staff, volunteers, and the congregation.
Qualifications
- A committed Christian with a passion for worship and spiritual leadership through music.
- Strong alignment with the church’s values, including a commitment to inclusive and welcoming practices as reflected in its status as a Reconciling Ministry.
- Proven experience in leading both traditional and contemporary worship music.
- Proficient in choral conducting, directing bands, and performing on keyboard.
- Creative, adaptable, and collaborative, with strong communication and organizational skills.
- Experienced in engaging individuals of all ages and abilities, supporting a wide range of musical backgrounds and skill levels.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in music or a related field required; advanced training preferred.
- Minimum five years of experience leading church music ministries.
- Familiarity with music technology and contemporary worship tools.
- Background check is required for this position.
Compensation & Benefits
- $50,000 - $55,000
