Librarian II

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Librarian II to perform related duties by overseeing facility maintenance, security, planning, and implementing public outreach activities. The successful candidate will provide customer service in circulation, reference, research, technology, and/or technical services; plan and organize programs and other special activities; take part in readers' advisory and material selection; stay informed of newly published material using professional journals, reviews and other sources; and research, innovate, and implement new initiatives to support the Libraries' mission as a place of life-long learning. Master's degree in library and/or information science accredited by the American Library Association (ALA); one to three years related experience and/or training as a professional librarian preferred. Possession of or ability to possess a license as required by the State Board for certification of Librarians is required.

SUMMARY
Manage, supervise, and coordinate activities of a branch or assigned staff in Library Services.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  

  • Develops goals, objectives, and performance work plans
  • Provides customer service in circulation, reference, research, technology, and/or technical services.
  • Plan and organize programs and other special activities.
  • Takes part in readers' advisory and material selection; stays informed of newly published material using professional journals, reviews, and other sources.
  • Research, innovate, and implement new initiatives to support the Library's mission as a place of lifelong learning.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements public programs, selects and organizes materials, manages library collections, distributes promotional material, and markets services.
  • Meets with schools and community organizations to promote the use of library services and conducts other public relations activities.
  • Provides customer service by answering difficult reference inquiries, assisting patrons with research, assisting with the operation of computers and equipment, and recommending reading material using print, non-print, and electronic resources.
  • Manages staff by interviewing, hiring, and training, scheduling personnel, verifying time sheets, and providing professional assistance.
  • Participates in team decision-making, staff development, and training.
  • Maintains overall facility/branch functions such as technology, cleanliness, collections, and security.
  • Plans and implements public outreach activities.
  • The work schedule will include evenings and weekends

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises the branch or assigned staff in Library Services.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities by the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Master's degree in library and/or information science accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) and three or more years' related experience and/or training as a professional librarian with two or more years' supervisory experience preferred.

Example of Positions
Public Services Librarian
Performs circulation and reference duties in the Main Library's Public Services department. Participate in collection development for the Main Library's adult circulating and reference collections. May participate in Interlibrary Loan and E-Branch duties. Instruct patrons on and provide programming and services around the Foundation Center grants collection and other online resources. May supervise other library staff as needed.
 
Branch Librarian
Research, innovate, and implement new programs and materials to support the Library's mission. Stay connected with the community and its needs by attending neighborhood meetings, visiting schools and daycares, and connecting with local churches and organizations. Stays ahead of current technology trends and develops programming and materials to anticipate and support new needs of customers. May supervise library support staff and/or volunteers. Provide outstanding customer service by performing circulation functions, answering reference inquiries, assisting patrons with research, assisting with the operation of computers and equipment, and recommending reading material using print, non-print, and electronic sources.  Work directly in a strong team environment with the Director of Libraries on master plan projects, programs, and innovative community library services. Preserves indexes and assists with the Library's photograph collection and special collections, and archives.

Archivist
Responsible for the management of archival materials, both digital and physical, held in the Virginia Room. This includes performing duties relating to their appraisal, arrangement, description, preservation, and access. Perform public reference services in the Virginia Room. Assist in the creation and delivery of in-house and outreach programming. Work on special and library system-related projects as required. Archival experience preferred. Graduate-level archives training and/or a graduate of the Modern Archives Institute preferred. Work schedule may include evenings and weekends.
 
Law Library
Performs responsible professional librarian work in the Roanoke Public Library System Law Library Branch. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Libraries. Keeps informed of new resources through professional journals, book reviews, and law library associations. Assists public customers, attorneys, paralegals, staff, and others in legal research. A strong background in legal research, including print and online resources, is essential. Knowledge of both civil and criminal laws.
 
 Cataloger
Catalogs and classifies library resources by national standards and ensures that the online catalog is consistent with other library holdings in the region. Large volumes of materials are handled daily. Processes knowledge of all cataloging tools. Supervises the Technical Services Department in the absence of the Department Manager. Assists the Director of Libraries with small projects.
 
Youth Services Librarian
Youth Services Librarian provides customer service by answering reference inquiries, assisting patrons with research, offering support with the operation of computers and equipment, and recommending reading material using print, non-print, and electronic sources. They will organize literacy and STEAM-based library programs as well as after-school and weekend programming for children and teens. The Youth Services Librarian stays connected with the various neighborhoods and communities and the needs of the youth and parents of the city by attending neighborhood meetings, visiting schools and daycares, and connecting with local organizations. They will be expected to continue local partnerships in support of our Star City Reads programs and all its efforts. The ability to use Excel to collect programming data to track program success will also be needed. The Youth Services Librarian plays a huge role in the library's collection development by staying informed of newly published books by means of professional journals, reviews, and other sources. They also supervise library support staff, volunteers, and work-study students.
