Job Description

Purpose:

Provides for nutritional care of patients on specialized units and conducts related quality improvement projects. Supervises the staff dietitians and performs associated administrative tasks.  

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The Dietitian Level III is charged with and responsible for:
1. Supervises the work of the head dietitians and dietitians.
2. Plans work schedules and assignments for the dietitians.
3. Screens and assesses patients on specialized units and other patient care areas in accurate and timely manner.  
4. Interprets pertinent laboratory, physical and social data in medical record-based on experience and knowledge in providing nutritional care, acts as resource in clinically care.
5. Instructs patients concerning diet, monitors patients’ reaction to diet, counsels patients on Food/Drug interactions and documents in the patient’s interdisciplinary care plan.
6. Consults with physician regarding appropriate diet modification.
7. Participates in rounds with patient health-care team of various services.
8. Advises patients and/or their families, prior to discharge in preparation of special therapeutic or modified diets at home.
9. Instructs and supervises dietary aides regarding special menus for patients and records pertinent patient information.
10. Precepts Dietetic Interns.
11. Maintains liaison with community organizations relating to nutrition education and/or   
     information.
12. Prepares quality improvement reports as requested by Supervisor.
13. Conducts peer reviews as requested by the Supervisor.
14. Maintains clinical productivity and other reports assigned by Supervisor.
15. Attends in-service training and participates in staff meetings.
 

Qualification Requirements: 
For appointment to Assignment Levels III and IV 
1. Registration by the CDR as a Registered Dietitian or New York State Certification as a Dietitian-Nutritionist.
