Pharmacy Technician - Per diem
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Pharmacy Technician at Whitney Young Health (WYH), under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, will perform pharmacy related non-dispensing functions to include medication management support, medication reviews, health literacy assessments, and educational activities. The primary purpose of the technician’s position is to engage with patients, caregivers, insurance companies, and providers to facilitate pharmacist-led services for community members.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Experience
- In accordance with state and federal regulations, assists the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in the practice of pharmacy. Assists the pharmacist in the performance of other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with WYH policies and procedures.
- Engages patients by greeting them, offering counseling when applicable, and answer questions to ensure a positive patient experience. Resolve patient issues and concerns in a timely manner.
- Models and shares customer service best practices with all team members to deliver a distinctive and joyful experience, including interpersonal habits that show care (e.g., greeting, eye contact, courtesy, etc.) and Whitney Young service traits (e.g., demonstrating curiosity to identify needs and proactively helping, servicing until satisfied, championing empathy and inclusivity, etc.).
- Responsible for using pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions
Operations
- Will support medication reconciliation and medication review activities including:
- Identifies patient requiring medication reviews (ie. Patient discharged from hospital or long-term care facility) and schedule appointments
- Obtains and documents pertinent medication, laboratory and other clinical data
- Completes initial medication reconciliation by comparing patient medication orders to existing medication to eliminate errors such as omission or duplications
- Assists patient with completing intake forms, verifies accuracy of patient information
- Assists with documentation of medication management interventions
- Communicates professionally with pharmacy team and other healthcare professionals
Daily Activities
- Assists with quality improvement projects
- Documents activities and enter patient data in appropriate database/software
- Managing incoming emails, faxes, calls and mailing consisting of patient questions or support needs, outreach, information verification and information requests
- Stock shelves, assists with inventory control, and order supplies for pharmacy
- Responsible for using pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions
- Handles telephone calls that do not require personal attention of the pharmacist, including those to physicians.
- Processes (corrects and resubmits) manual claims for third party program prescription services in a timely and efficient manner, and performs other clerical duties, as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager.
- Assists and supports Pharmacy Department on inventory management activities, such as, ordering, unpacking, checking and storing shipment of pharmaceuticals. Maintains knowledge of WYH Pharmacy asset protection techniques, and files claims for warehouse overages (merchandise received, but not billed), shortages (merchandise billed, but not received), order errors or damaged goods involving Rx drugs.

Miscellaneous
- Maintains current knowledge and required certification as established by federal and state regulations
- Demonstrate excellence in both internal and external customer service.
- Understand and adhere to HIPAA compliance, corporate compliance and client confidentiality.
- Ensure and/or remain in compliance with local, State, and Federal regulation, i.e. DHHSHRSA and NYSDOH, and all accreditation standards (e.g. Joint Commission and NCQA-PCMH).
- Adhere to the National Patient Safety Goals as defined by the Joint Commission and WYH.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED equivalent certification, Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) within one year of hiring, valid driver’s license, and previous experience as pharmacy technician

Salary range: $18.50 - $25.00 hourly
