Job Summary:

 

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Temporary Laboratory Technician 1 position for the the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station at Oregon State University (OSU ). This position is located in Newport, Oregon.

 

The Laboratory Technician 1 (Lab Tech) will be a member of the https://agsci.oregonstate.edu/state-fisheries-genomics-lab which is located on the https://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/ campus in Newport, Oregon. The Lab Tech will inventory tissue samples (i.e., fin clips) and environmental DNA samples (i.e., water samples) and then perform DNA extractions. The Lab Tech will be supervised by Dr. Kathleen O’Malley and work closely with the Senior Faculty Research Assistant, Cristín Fitzpatrick.

 

The Lab Tech will be part of a larger research team that conducts fisheries genetics research to help address the science and management needs of the https://marineresearch.oregonstate.edu/ and the https://www.dfw.state.or.us/. The SFGL provides leadership in the production of genetic data, the development of science-based tools and information from those data, and the formulation of science-based recommendations based on the genetic information. Our research spans both the freshwater and marine environments focusing on species of ecological, evolutionary, or economic importance.

Key Responsibilities

 

100% Sample processing – Includes inventorying tissue samples and environmental DNA samples as well as extracting DNA from these two sample types. These duties will be performed following the protocols of the SFGL under the guidance of the Senior Faculty Research Assistant.

 

What You Will Need

 

NOTE : An Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science may substitute for the required experience.

 

Additional Required Minimum Qualifications:

 

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, with experience in Excel.

• Ability to keep detailed records in a lab notebook and on a desktop computer.

• Ability to maintain attention to detail.

• Ability to work as part of a team and independently.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate in a manner that shows respect and inclusivity for all co-workers.

 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

 

What We Would Like You to Have


 

• A bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and coursework in genetics.

• Experience inventorying tissue samples and performing DNA extraction.

• Experience performing PCR amplification.

• Experience with database systems

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

• Ability to perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time.

• May be required to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds repeatedly.
