Community Engagement Associate (Civic Engagement & Legislative Advocacy) Internship
Washington Autism Alliance (WAA) is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families.
We provide essential support services, including:
● Family Support: Offering guidance, resources, and community connections to help families navigate challenges and access appropriate services.
● Training and Education: Providing training and education to professionals and families on evidence-based practices, early intervention, and other relevant topics.
● Advocacy: Advocating for policies and systems that support individuals with ASD/IDD and their families, including increased access to healthcare, education, and community services.

Position Description:
The Legislative Advocacy Intern supports WAA's civic engagement and legislative advocacy efforts. This internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the legislative process and contribute to meaningful change for individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities(I/DD) including autism(ASD) and their families. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, have strong research and communication skills, and possess a passion for advocacy.
Responsibilities:
● Assist in tracking and monitoring relevant legislation at the state level.
● Conduct research on policy issues related to autism and developmental disabilities.
● Support the preparation of materials for legislative briefings and advocacy meetings.
● Attend legislative sessions, committee hearings, and stakeholder meetings as needed.
● Assist with grassroots advocacy efforts, including communicating with constituents and organizing advocacy events.
● Help maintain relationships with legislators and legislative staff.
● Contribute to the development of advocacy materials, such as fact sheets and talking points.
● Provide administrative support to the CEO and other staff involved in advocacy efforts.
● Assist with data entry and maintaining accurate records of legislative activities.
● Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
● Strong interest in legislative advocacy and the political process.
● Excellent research and analytical skills. ● Strong written and verbal communication skills. ● Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
● Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
● Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or Google Workspace.
● Ability to maintain confidentiality. ● An interest in helping individuals and families affected by autism is preferred.
● Reliable transportation to attend off-site meetings and events may be required.
● Schedule flexibility to attend occasional evening or weekend events may be required.

Job Type: Internship (Part-time, 15 hours/week)
Commitment: 1 year
