Digital Training Course Developer

Organization: ASU SolarSPELL Initiative (Solar Powered Educational Learning Library)

Location: Tempe and/or Remote

Type: Unpaid or for credit | ~10 hours/week

Eligibility: Open to all students and universities; international students welcome. (Counts as on-campus experience for ASU students—no OPT/CPT required.)

About the Internship

The SolarSPELL Initiative is seeking creative, detail-oriented, and globally-minded interns to develop offline, self-paced digital training courses. These courses cover topics such as digital literacy, information literacy, and more, and are used in SolarSPELL digital libraries around the world, including in countries like Lesotho, Rwanda, and South Sudan.

Courses are created in PowerPoint using iSpring Suite 11, tailored for offline access, and designed to be engaging and accessible across languages and literacy levels.

Interns will create courses that are:

  • User-friendly for individuals with low digital literacy
  • Accessible to learners with varying levels of English proficiency
  • Engaging and relevant for the target audience

This is a meaningful opportunity to contribute to educational equity by helping educators and students in underserved regions gain confidence and skills in using digital learning tools.

About SolarSPELL

SolarSPELL (Solar Powered Educational Learning Library) is a global educational initiative based at ASU. We create offline, solar-powered digital libraries designed for areas with little to no access to electricity or internet. Our libraries provide a WiFi hotspot that enables free access to curated educational resources via any smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Responsibilities

  • Become familiar with SolarSPELL’s programs across east and southern Africa
  • Review the current library contents and training model used in-field to develop an understanding of the needs of the communities we serve
  • Design and develop new interactive digital training courses from start to finish using PowerPoint and iSpring Suite 11 (interns will be provided with a license, training, and mentorship for iSpring Suite 11 from a SolarSPELL staff member)
  • Create all course components, such as quizzes, interactive elements, or scenario-based exercises
  • Collaborate with team members to incorporate culturally appropriate examples and visuals
  • Incorporate feedback from SolarSPELL staff
  • Iteratively evaluate the course, making ongoing improvements to flow, engagement, and accessibility

Ideal Candidate

  • Experience or background in education, teaching, instructional design, or related field
  • Experience with or aptitude to learn digital course development tools such as iSpring or Articulate Storyline
  • Strong writing, editing, and digital communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on a diverse team
  • Access to a Windows computer with Microsoft Office, or availability to use the SolarSPELL Windows desktop at our Tempe office 
  • Globally-minded and motivated to use technology for social impact and educational inclusion
