Journey to Freedom Facilitator

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Journey to Freedom Facilitator to join our team.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. 

 

As a Journey to Freedom Facilitator you will be responsible for leading small group programs within our YMCA Centers, offering spiritual and emotional support to participants in a welcoming, nonjudgmental space. If hired, you will help participants engage in meaningful conversations about growth, healing, and transformation while presenting yourself in a professional manner to offer safe and engaging healthy lifestyle practices.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate a minimum of 2 groups (or 7 groups per year), each typically running 7–10 weekly sessions.
  • Provide a safe and emotionally healthy environment for participants to explore their stories and growth.
  • Prepare for each group by reviewing provided materials and arriving early to set up the space.
  • Lead weekly small-group sessions using the approved Journey to Freedom curriculum.
  • Model excellent group facilitation: active listening, balanced participation, time management, and respectful dialogue.
  • Maintain group boundaries, ensuring conversations remain emotionally and spiritually safe for all.
  • Refer sensitive participant issues or concerns to Mission Department staff; this is not a counseling or advisory role.
  • Maintain regular communication with Mission Department staff, providing feedback and updates on group progress or needs.
  • Support and encourage co-facilitators when applicable.
  • Attend required facilitator trainings and occasional development meetings to strengthen facilitation skills and connection to the overall mission.
  • Engage participants of diverse faith backgrounds with empathy and respect, upholding the YMCA’s commitment to inclusivity and holistic care.
  • Embraces and actively promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.
  • Completion of Journey to Freedom foundational group (required).
  • Completion of Journey to Freedom facilitator training (required, provided upon hire).
  • Demonstrated experience or aptitude in group facilitation, peer leadership, or small groups.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, emotional maturity, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Respect for people of all faith backgrounds, with a commitment to upholding Christian principles in practice.
  • Positive attitude and a passion for walking alongside others in their personal and spiritual growth.
  • Complete other online and in-person training as required.
  • Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act).
  • You are committed to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day, and other online and in-person training as required.

 

Wage: $18.00 to $22.00 per hour, depending on qualifications

 

Hours: Part-Time, Up to 25 hours per week

 

Location: YMCA Association Office, Tacoma, WA
