Smart City Student Intern - Marketing Coordinator

INTRODUCTION:
The City of Racine needs to showcase its past, present, and future Smart City Initiatives. We have new online portals that will soon be available for citizens to participate in the City of Racine government processes that need to be presented in exciting and engaging ways. This job will help plan and create the marketing or communication campaigns and stories for the city. This is very impactful work because the purpose of a Smart City is to improve the lives of a city’s citizens and increase economic development through appropriate use of technology.
 
POSITION PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Chief Information Officer, this position ensures that the citizens and city departments know what Smart City initiatives have been completed and understand how future projects will help the citizens. Excites others to get involved in improving broadband/internet access/use.
 
EXPECTED WORK SCHEDULE: 
The schedule will be determined after hiring. Applicant must be available to meet with the City of Racine employees during the day from Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Position offers the ability to work remotely except for meetings, community outreach, and events. Prefer an intern that can work at least 15-20 hours a week. This work will continue until the end of 2025.

 

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
 

  • Schedule, plan, and lead marketing ideation meetings.
  • Collaborate with other interns to discuss best ways to present found data and tell the Racine Smart Cities story.
  • Take notes at a meeting.
  • Create plan for different ways to present data.
  • Propose marketing campaigns and advertisements.
  • Social media content creation and management.
  • Research anything you don’t know how to do and ask questions for guidance.
  • Other duties as assigned around marketing/communication coordination.


ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Sitting at a desk in an air-conditioned/heated office or working from home. 

 

Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate or graduate college student enrolled and intend to continue in school for the next semester.
  • A full-time student shall consist of a minimum of 12 credits per semester and part-time student shall consist of less than 12 credits but more than 3 credits. Currently attending a two or four year college/university
  • At least 2 courses in Marketing or 1 in Marketing and 1 in Business, Communication, Public Relations, Integrated Marketing Communication, or similar course work.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual in Spanish

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Knowledge of how to create marketing strategies, goals, and objectives
  • Collaborates well with others
  • Ability to excite others using words (written, spoken, or graphical)
  • Creativity in digital marketing and communication
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Microsoft Suite knowledge (Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.)
  • Skilled in the use of Canva software and popular Social Media platforms
  • Knowledge of how to set an agenda, take notes of a meeting, and create meeting minutes
  • Excellent time management skills, organization, attention to detail

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE POSITION:
Sitting and typing at a terminal while viewing a computer screen. 

EQUIPMENT USED:
Telephones, computer with associated peripherals, and software.

EXPECTED OUT COME FOR STUDENT:
Research, plan, and present marketing campaigns.  Ability to explore marketing as a career path.  Increase in marketing/communication skills with hands-on experience.  Experience working for a city government and making an impact on the community.  Network with professionals in the field.  Gain confidence for classroom learning and future internship/career opportunities.
