Engineering Intern (Water Resources)

You've been working hard toward your degree and now you desire to put that knowledge into action! The City of Pomona is an exceptional place for learning, doing impactful work, and obtaining real-life experience to help you better prepare for a career in government engineering. The Water Resources Department Engineering Intern will be directly immersed and involved with the operations, maintenance and design of water, sewer, and storm infrastructure Citywide. There will be varied exposure to office, field and interagency facets of engineering. The Intern will work directly with the Engineering team within the Water Resources Department and will be introduced to professional Operations staff. 

 

 Work hours: 10-20 hours per week, flexible schedule but within City business hours. The hours may be between Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 
 

This position is classified as at-will, hourly, part-time. Hourly, part-time positions average 10-20 hours per week and less than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year.


Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate for the Engineering Intern (Water Resources) position is a motivated and detail-oriented individual with strong knowledge of Windows-based systems, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; and the capability to use AutoCAD and ArcGIS. They possess excellent oral and written communication skills, are personable, and demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

The candidate is a self-starter with adherence to health and safety procedures, exceptional attention to detail, good organizational skills, and an outstanding work ethic. With knowledge of basic engineering principles and a passion for producing high-quality work products, they are prepared to contribute to field data collection, regulatory compliance, land development evaluations, and utility mapping. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

  • Current enrollment as a college/university junior, senior, or graduate student in the field of Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Completion of a survey and fluids/hydraulics course.

License

  • Possession of a valid Class C driver's license is required at the time of application.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Assists with researching and evaluating development impacts of projects and alternatives.
  • Prepares spreadsheets, graphs, drawings, and cost estimates.
  • Supports regulatory compliance permitting and report preparation.
  • Reviews documents and technical publications.
  • Assists with the preparation of utility resource mapping using GIS, AutoCAD detail drawing generation, and performs field work including photo documentation. 
  • Coordinates with local agencies, site assessments, and infrastructure projects. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to work in a standard office environment; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
