Assistant Dean of Students

Position Reports Directly to: Principal, Assistant Principal, & Dean of Community Life
Position Type: 10 months – minimum salary of $50,000 with opportunity for higher base salary depending on experience, education level, and credential. salaried
Hours: Regular school days, after-school extracurricular activities, and select summer dates to be determined..

Purpose
The Assistant Dean of Students supports the school’s disciplinary code in a way that embraces our Catholic and Dominican mission through a more reflective lens of student mental and emotional health, which encourages a spirit of order and respect for the rights of others, thus providing an atmosphere in which the individual and educational process can flourish. The Assistant Dean of Students assists in managing student behavior, implementing school policies, supporting faculty, and fostering positive school culture. The Assistant Dean works closely with the Dean of Community Life, Principal, social workers, teachers, and families to ensure student success both academically and socially.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Discipline & Conduct

  • Enforce school-wide behavioral expectations and discipline policies.
  • Manage student behavioral incidents, investigate complaints, and issue appropriate consequences.
  • Mediate conflicts between students and facilitate restorative practices where appropriate.
  • Document and address student attendance and discipline issues.

Student Culture & Climate

  • Support initiatives that build a positive, inclusive, and respectful school environment.
  • Monitor student behavior in hallways, cafeterias, and during school events.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to recognize and celebrate positive student behavior.
  • Highly visible to the Marian Catholic community by monitoring hallways and school grounds before and after school as well as during changing periods and supervising the cafeteria during lunch.

Student Support

  • Work with counselors, social workers, and families to address behavioral or academic concerns.
  • Develop and monitor behavior intervention plans for students in need.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to at-risk students.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate records of disciplinary actions and student behavior.
  • Generate regular attendance reports for administrative review and identify trends, patterns, and areas of concern in student attendance data.
  • Assist in supervising school events, lunch periods, arrival/dismissal, and other non-instructional activities.
  • Participate in staff meetings, parent conferences, and professional development sessions.
  • Oversees after-school and Saturday detentions.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Act as a liaison between students, parents, faculty, and administration.
  • Communicate consistently and clearly regarding student behavior and school policies.
  • Support classroom teachers with strategies to manage behavior and foster engagement.
  • Works closely with school security personnel to ensure school safety.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Administration, or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Prior experience in education, student affairs, or behavioral intervention (preferably at the secondary level)
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills
  • Knowledge of restorative justice, trauma-informed practices, and culturally responsive discipline
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
  • Familiarity with educational policies, student codes of conduct, and legal compliance

Preferred Attributes:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or other language) a plus
  • Certification in school administration or leadership
  • Experience working in diverse educational environments
  • Proficiency with student information systems
