Job Title: Director of Education | In-Person | Requires Washington State Administrator Certification

Overview: Whatcom Intergenerational High School (WIHS) is seeking a visionary and equity-driven Director of Education to lead our teaching and learning program. This role is equivalent to a Principal and is central to advancing our school’s mission: to provide relational, inclusive, and student-centered education rooted in Phenomenon-Based Learning, Critical Literacy, and Intergenerational Learning.

WIHS is a small, public charter high school serving students from across Whatcom County, many of whom have been underserved by traditional education systems. We seek a leader committed to restorative practices, collaborative decision-making, and innovative instruction.

Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership in curriculum design, instructional practice, and academic programming
  • Support teachers in implementing culturally responsive, project-based, and phenomenon-based learning.
  • Lead data-informed instructional improvement and professional development
  • Observe classrooms, provide coaching and feedback, and evaluate instructional staff

School Culture & Student Success

  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and relational school climate grounded in restorative practices
  • Promote student achievement and well-being, ensuring all learners are supported academically, socially, and emotionally.
  • Build systems that encourage student voice, family engagement, and community partnerships

Team, Operations & Compliance

  • Supervise teaching staff and support personnel in alignment with school policies and goals
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Operations to ensure smooth daily operations
  • Manage academic schedules, state testing, interventions, and instructional resources
  • Ensure timely and accurate compliance reporting to the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), including state assessments, graduation tracking, and other required submissions
  • Ensure compliance with state education requirements, charter authorizer expectations, and internal accountability measures

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Washington State Administrator Certification
  • Demonstrated experience in instructional leadership, school leadership, or academic coordination
  • Deep commitment to educational equity and culturally responsive leadership
  • Experience supporting diverse student populations and inclusive learning environments
  • Strong background in curriculum development, teacher coaching, and school-wide instructional planning
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with project-based, interdisciplinary, or alternative education models
  • Experience in a startup or charter school environment
  • Bilingual or multilingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply
  • Experience with restorative practices, trauma-informed education, and/or social-emotional learning

Where You’ll Work: WIHS is located inside the Bellis Fair Mall in northern Bellingham, WA—just 90 minutes north of Seattle. This is an on-site leadership role. Relocation or reliable commuting is required.
