What I liked

While working at WinShape Camps, I discovered that I absolutely love to have fun with kids while sharing the Gospel with them. Seeing the joy on the camper's faces ultimately made me feel joyful even at times when I felt exhausted.

What I wish was different

There wasn't really much that I wished was different about working at camp with the exception of having limited access to our communication devices but I agreed that when I work, my main focus should only be on the campers and not on my communication device.

Advice

My mid-summer, exhaustion was carrying a whole lot of my co-counselors as well as I down. However, remembering that every week we received new campers who are eager to experience camp for either the first time or for another week during the summer. Always encouraging each other and lifting each other up is what always helped whenever me other the other counselors felt exhausted because by the end of the summer when we look back at those 8 weeks, we become filled with joy because we know that we made an impact of the lives of those campers.

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to teach kids material that I was very familiar with, and I enjoyed getting to relate to them and share the Gospel with them. Honestly, I enjoyed getting to be a kid during the week while I was running the camp, and then on the weekends I enjoyed getting to interact with my team. I also very much enjoyed my fellow employees.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more communication about the schedule during the summer, and I wish there had been more communication about expectations for the summer beforehand. I also wish there had been more personal time.

Advice

I would recommend preparing yourself spiritually before embarking for the summer. That was something I struggled with throughout the summer. To go along with that, I would recommend starting off the summer being very intentional about getting into the word to pour into yourself in order that you can pour into campers.

Senior Camp- Camp Counselor

What I liked

I enjoyed the culture of Winshape Camps and the other staff members. If I had an issue whether it was camp-related or not, I knew I could talk to any of the staff members and they would help me. It is well-organized camp. Camp counselors always had a schedule on hand with specific times and if anything changed we were notified immediately.

What I wish was different

The only difficult part was the campers, but WinShape can't do anything about the kids coming to camp, considering WinShape is accepting of everyone. I found it to be a good test of my character, building traits like patience, acceptance, and persistence.

Advice

WinShape is a great place to work. It is a great community and character builder.

What I liked

Spiritual involvement, professionalism, responsibility

What I wish was different

N/A

Advice

If you apply, read Winshaoe camp’s belief systems very carefully. If you do not completely agree with what they say, do not contain your application. This is a camp where we speak truth into girls and boys lives so if you can’t feel the weight of that or just want in for the money, this is not a camp for you.

What I liked

EVERYTHING. WinShape changed my life. I found purpose, meaning and so much fulfillment from teaching kids all summer. I was able to see my campers grow and understanding new concepts, show love and kindness to others, and build close relationships with one another. Every day I woke up joyful and excited to have fun with the campers. Every expense was paid for, all the food, lodging, travel, etc. It was such a wonderful experience, that I changed my major to education the following year.

What I wish was different

I wish I had prepared for this job by studying the material I would be teaching prior to May - for the first couple weeks, I ended up staying up late to ensure I knew the material which was not ideal. But thankfully, by the second or third week I had it memorized well and I had a very supportive team who helped guide me.

Advice

Go out of your comfort zone and invest into our future leaders - it is enriching, encouraging and all around a growing experience.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Rome, GA

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to meet new kids each week and tell them about Jesus.

What I wish was different

Every week we were with different kids and every minute of our days were planned out so there was not much opportunity for deep relationships.

Advice

You have to go into this experience fully knowing that you are going to leave the kids in a week so work hard to connect them with people in the church.

Camp Counselor

May - July 2022 • Young Harris, GA

What I liked

I loved sharing the gospel with campers and getting to know them! The fellow staff are amazing! You will make great relationships if you seek them out. You will also walk a lot and get a lot of exercise!

What I wish was different

The days were exhausting and there was not much time to rest. It was very easy to get burnt out. Teaching skills was stressful at times. I wish there was more time to talk to skill leaders to improve the skill. Some counselors had to tach more skills than others.

Advice

If you decide to work here, definitely prioritize your time with God. It is so easy to want to get so busy that you don't take a second rest and process. If you don't prioritize it, you will leave camp feeling burnt out and drained. Don't stay up late because you'll need sleep! Realize that the campers just want to have fun and be creative with how you keep them entertained! Encourage fellow staff (they need it)!!

What I liked

I found myself growing spiritually, physically and emotionally at a very fast rate. Every single day you get to share the Gospel with children through your words and actions. You get to even see some kids make a decision to follow Christ which is really special. The friends that I made over the summer are like family now because of the really close bonds that we have.

What I wish was different

It is hard work and it can be difficult to find rest and quiet time. One must be very intentional with getting sleep and making sure you are well-rested every single day.

Advice

Go all out if you are wanting to serve with WinShape Camps. Not many jobs offer the ability to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ every single weekday for 8 to 9 weeks. Do not miss out on what the Lord is doing through you because the time will fly by.
