I just wish that the environment was not so toxic and drama filled.

Undergraduate Researcher
June - August 2018 • St. Louis, MO
What I liked
I liked the lab I was working in. There was a hierarchy of researchers and I was able to receive help from graduate researchers if the professor wasn't around. I was able to explore concepts independently, too.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more time to spend researching with the group.
Advice
Don't be afraid to email research groups to inquire about opportunities!

Glass Washer / Lab Assistant I
June - August 2018 • St. Louis, MO
What I liked
I got a lot of lab experience that really helped me with skills in a lab for school. It was also cool to see just what researchers do & how long everything takes.
What I wish was different
I wish I would’ve understood the subject more. I did a lot of reading while I was there to learn but I hadn’t been through biochemistry yet so I didn’t know specifics.
Advice
It is an amazing experience that everyone should try to do. If you do this you need to spend as much time as possible both in and out of the job trying to learn and understand what and why you are doing the experiments you are doing.

Biomedical Engineering Intern
May - July 2018 • St. Louis, MO
What I liked
This internship was unlike any others I have heard of and was a ton of fun. Throughout the summer, each intern was paired with a research mentor who we worked closely with. We were given plenty of time to be in and outside of the lab, as the program had weekly events where all the interns would go out and explore the city. The structure, mentorship, and experience were all great.

Data Assistant
May - August 2018 • St. Louis, MO
What I liked
I enjoyed just about every part of this summer. The people at WASHU and BJC are just amazing to work with. My mentor was really supportive and taught me so much.
What I wish was different
I think the one thing I wish had been different is the fact that sometimes in research especially in hospitals, the machines are being used for treatement during the day and then in the evening there's always different groups trying to use the machines. So in the time I was there, I didn't really get to use the machine much with my mentor. Actually we only used it once. So I wish I could have gotten to use it more.
Advice
One piece of advice I would give is make connections and form good relationships at the place you're working at. A lot of times you might be given a task to complete and you won't really know where to start, but there will have been people around you that know exactly what to do and would love to help if you just ask.

Research Intern
June - August 2018 • St. Louis, MO
What I liked
St. Louis was a great slow paced city to be in for a summer. Quite restful. I also loved working on rule-based models for chemical modeling.
What I wish was different
I wish the housing situation was more flexible so I could stay longer on WashU's campus.
Advice
Transportation is difficult in St. Louis so living close to a subway line is a must.
