Cougar Kids Camp

May 2018 - August 2019 • Pullman, WA

What I liked

I liked working with a great group of individuals who shared similar interests. Also, the kids are amazing and they made work fun every single day.

What I wish was different

I worked there for two years and some of the kids had been going to this camp for a while so they knew everything about camp. Maybe making some major changes rather than small ones.

Advice

You are going to be working with young kids, so be ready to bring a lot of energy. Also, no one is too cool for camp.

Psychologist Research Assistant

June 2018 - August 2019 • Richland, WA

What I liked

Fabulous experience learning the research processes complexities that normally go unrecognized- for instance, learning how to write a professional grant proposal was invaluable

What I wish was different

I wish that we would have had a larger team of researchers that did not have an inevitability high turn over rate as it complicated the distribution of work and natural hierarchy dynamics of the group

Advice

The work can be exhaustive - and at times, even tedious - but the hands on, real world experience earned during the process will be a huge asset to me in both my academic and professional career

Agriculture Research Intern

May - August 2019 • Pullman, WA

What I liked

My employer let me make my own mistakes, which was incredibly valuable!

What I wish was different

Pullman, WA is a very dull place over the summer, especially since I did not really have coworkers in my age group.

Advice

If there's research that relates to your career but not offered by anyone at Whitman, you should email professors... the earlier the better; most grant applications are due in December or early January. Then, use the Whitman Internship Grant to pay for it, in the event you cannot get the experience funded.

Facility Manager

May 2018 • Pullman, WA

What I liked

University Recreations offers so many opportunities for professional growth. I started at the front desk, became an office administrator after 3 months, and manager 5 months after that. Additionally, I've been involved with two councils that give me chances to improve in areas that reinforce my major and career path. For example, one council plans our annual banquet. My aspiration is to be a corporate event planner, so working directly with the company directors is great experience and connection creation.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't just get involved, but apply yourself beyond your comfort level. This job has taught me the meaning of "reap what you sow" by giving me opportunities to better myself every single day. By being involved with my coworkers and superior managers, I have accelerated my abilities to be confident, professional, and patient. I'm challenged at University Recreation to be a diligent leader; when all these years before I was convinced I was a follower. Find a place where you can grow.
