What I liked

There was so much opportunity to grow at this company! Great Intern program with plenty of events.

Advice

In my experience, it was best to be self directed through the duration of the internship. Create goals for yourself other than what your manager has created and seek change if you need it. Everyone is willing to help.

Social Media Analytics Intern

June - August 2019 • Knoxville, TN

What I liked

Discovery really prioritizes their interns. Company executives, even the CEO, took time out of their busy schedules to pour into the interns. Work environment was very fast, but the team oriented atmosphere made it easy for me to ask questions. The atmosphere at Discovery was fantastic. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience!

What I wish was different

Personally, I was not full time at the start of the summer. This was not true for all interns, however I do wish that option had been open to me from the start of the summer.

Advice

Know everything you can about Microsoft Excel before you show up. It is essential for success. Also, network when you are there. Get peoples' LinkedIn profiles every chance you get!

Brand Merchandising Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the community and culture at Discovery. Everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly. I had lots of opportunities to meet people from across the company for informational meetings. I was able to learn so much about Discovery and different career paths from all of the wonderful employees at Discovery who were so willing to sit and chat with me. The Discovery Internship Program was recently ranked #4 on Vault's Survey of Top Media and Telecom Internship Programs. The program teaches you about the media and entertainment industry from the ground up. The speaker series was one of my favorite parts of the summer. Executives from across the company, including President and CEO David Zaslav, would share their journey with the intern class and offered insightful advice.

What I wish was different

I wish Discovery had opportunities in the fall to stay on the team. Discovery only offers Spring and Summer Intern positions, and I wish I could have been able to stay on the team. I also wish there was more time to mingle and network with other interns.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience would be to truly take advantage of all that Discovery employees have to offer you. I was able to talk to people from so many different departments. It was a great networking and learning experience. I would also say that is important to talk to your intern recruiters and network with them as well, because they are so happy to help you in the future.

Video Production Intern

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I love the company culture. All of my projects were hands-on and I felt like a central member of the team.

What I wish was different

The internship only lets you work a maximum of 30 hours a week, and I wanted to work more hours per week.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to other members of the company about anything, even if it's not related to your department or if you just want to get coffee.

Diversity Equity Engagement Intern

June 2021 • Burbank, CA

What I liked

Very supportive and inclusive office, excellent intern programming events, and access to an impressive network. Interns are clearly appreciated at WM, and the folks here want to help you achieve your goals.

What I wish was different

My opportunity was remote, so trying to connect with others was difficult, especially being the only intern in my office.

Advice

Reach out to folks, and treat the "coffee chats" like an interview about their career if you're struggling to come up with conversation topics.

Software Developer

May - August 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I was already excited to work for WarnerMedia since they have contributed so much in the entertainment industry but I hadn’t expected to have such an eventful internship. I got to meet developers who worked with CNN, Cartoon Network, WarnerBros and more. I joined the team as they were releasing HBO Max and got to see early premiers of shows before the public audience. For our tasks, I was treated as a member of the team and participated in agile meetings that have taught me so much about the art of communication. If I hadn’t any tasks to complete, WarnerMedia provided meaningful events for interns to participate in such as conversations about racial diversity, LGBTQ+ inclusion, career advice and networking tips. My perception of the company had expanded and I have nothing but positive feedback about their internship program. Even after the internship, I’m often invited to join career opportunities with them and stay connected with employees on LinkedIn to stay in touch even after graduation. WarnerMedia’s internship made me feel very included with the company.

What I wish was different

Like many other interns, the pandemic situation caused me to work from home. I would have liked to have work with my team in person to make closer connections. I wanted to see how working in person differs from online to get experience for future job positions.

Advice

I would say to not be afraid to voice your questions. Put yourself out there. Companies understand you’re an intern and are new to the work environment. You’re a rookie and that’s okay! The internship is a great place to learn so take advantage of being able to work with so many professionals. You don’t have to stay stuck on an issue on your own. They’re often more eager to help than you think.

Entertainment Content Partnerships Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved everything about this internship. I not only learned a lot about advertising and the entertainment industry but I met amazing people. The people at WarnerMedia are all open to meeting interns for coffee chats. There was an internship group project and that was also a great experience working in the group. WarnerMedia just has amazing people and interns. They teach a lot especially the content partnerships department. Moreover, there were lunch & learns multiple times a week which really gave a lot of information on different departments in the company.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship program organized more ways for interns to socialize and get to know each other earlier in the summer. We somehow started to socialize and then became close but it took a while.

Advice

Just work hard! Put everything into your tasks and make sure they are your 110% effort because it really shows. Show improvement and genuinely try to learn. Meet people from the company for coffee chats to get to know what they do and if you would like to do that in the future.

Sports Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved getting to experience the media culture in New York City, getting exposure to the business behind media buying and selling and meeting with great contacts both internally and externally of Warner to further my professional network. New York City is also one of my favorite places on earth, I could go on for hours about how incredible it is! The workplace culture within media is fairly casual (I've found thus far), and focuses on transparency which I believe is key in successful marketing companies today.

What I wish was different

I wish I had lived a little closer to work, or in the NYU dorms! Or the duration had been longer!

Advice

Informational interviews can be set up with anyone; reach out! The worst you can get is a no reply or a no. Most will be willing to chat on the phone or sit down over coffee for 30 minutes, and come prepared with actual questions you have about your career and be ready to take notes! Always follow up with a thank you e-mail, and if it's a personal matter, a handwritten thank you note.

Big Data Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

The internship provided me with so many learning experiences and connections. The work culture was superb. I do think that your overall experience is a reflection of the team that you are working with and those whom you surround yourself with, however, you can always find happiness with this company.

What I wish was different

I joined in the middle of an acquisition, so the work place was incredibly busy and fast-paced. At times, I felt overlooked because of this.

Advice

If you're not immediately assigned a mentor and project, seek them on your own. Spend as much time getting to know the other employees - they are wonderful people. Take in all that the company has to offer, you won't regret it.
