USAA

Front End Web Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Plano, TX

What I liked

The company culture was laid back and open. The work we did was actually implemented into production, and relevant to what I'm looking for in a career.

What I wish was different

I was on a team of all interns secluded in a conference room, so I didn't get the most accurate picture of what life would be like if I returned for full-time employment.

Advice

MIS majors get very little programming exposure during the program, so to be a development intern I would strongly encourage some outside study. Pick a language that you like (JavaScript in my case) and build some things with it that you can then show potential employers. You will gain valuable programming experience to transfer into a career, as well as a portfolio you can use to show employers what you can do.

IT Intern

June - August 2018 • Plano, TX

What I liked

The atmosphere of the company was refreshing. Mistakes were opportunities to learn. The workspace was clean and an open environment for collaboration. The team we worked alongside welcomed myself and other interns with open arms.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to experience a wide variety of groups instead of working exclusively within one department. But it is understandable that with only 10 weeks that would be difficult.

Advice

Don’t just focus on doing the job you are given. The internship is an experience to make friends and connections that will last a lot longer than the 10 weeks you are there.

Financial Advice and Solutions Group Intern

May - August 2018 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

I loved working in a business environment that had an incredible culture. I was also treated like an adult even though I was only an intern. They wanted to hear my ideas and made me feel important. I also had a ton of time spent with the executives which was great networking.

What I wish was different

I do not really wish anything was different. I loved every minute of my internship and would highly reccommend it to anyone who is interested in working with a massive company.

Advice

I would like to share this advice... When you speak or give presentations to authoritative figures, make sure to do so with as much confidence as possible. Even if you do not understand exactly what you are presenting on or talking about, they will see how hard you are trying and will respect you for that. I will also give this advice... If the oppotunity to move across the country arises for an internship, DO IT. Now is the time to do so and learn about yourself and what you like.

Software Developer and Integrator III Intern

May - August 2018 • Plano, TX

What I liked

The working environment was fantastic. Everyone at USAA is extremely helpful and will stop what they are doing to help solve your problems. They really emphasize teamwork and being part of a company with works that matters , especially since it affects our members financially (US Veterans and their families). I learned so much in this internship that it dwarfs nearly all my college computer science classes combined.

What I wish was different

That it was longer!

Advice

Just be yourself. Be confident in your skillset. Be coachable and ready to learn.

Software Integrator

May - August 2017 • Plano, TX

What I liked

Real work was accomplished that was put into production. Had many fun networking and morale booster events. Had opportunity to join and participate in employee groups and clubs. Had their own Gamecon, sports leagues, and happy hour groups.

What I wish was different

Wish there was an opportunity to work from home and continue internship.

Advice

Don't be afraid of challenging yourself. USAA put most people opposite to their strengths and waited to see if we rose to the challenge.

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2017 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

They have a really solid intern program build up. There were 11 interns including me when I worked there. They make sure that you have a project that can be completed during the internship, and you have lots of resources to complete it. All the people I met that had worked there were very friendly and approachable. They also have educational programs like Actuarial Foundations and Generalized Linear Models. There are also presentations you'll have to do at the end of the internship that will help you for future jobs.

What I wish was different

Work got a little repetitive for me, but they are good at creating work for you if you get bored or finish your project early.

Advice

To be competitive, try to have at least one actuary exam passed before your internship. Don't be afraid that you will look "dumb" if you ask questions, and understand that your mentor is reviewing your performance throughout the internship.
