I enjoyed being able to rotate throughout different pathology disciplines such as autopsy, neuropathology, histology, and cytology.
What I wish was different
I wish the internship would have been longer.
Advice
Ask professors if they know of any options for you. It was one of my professors that got me in contact with the pathologist I worked under.

Patient Care Tech
May 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA
What I liked
Helping patients, laughing with them, learning about them, learning about caring for different types of patients, being be the patients literal lifeline. Calling the nurse when they physically couldn't get up or breathe, etc. Feeling wanted and needed by someone.
What I wish was different
Management! Due to some days we are too busy to talk with patients, get to know them and do extra things for them like get their makeup on, make them feel a bit better for once. If its not a deadly emergency, we don't have the time to get it done. Patients complain about that we are so busy, sometimes we cant even get them off a bedpan in time/bathroom or get them ice. No time for us to eat or take breaks because we are reached our "Limit of Patient Care Techs" on the unit. Management needs to step it up and use our care techs, not abuse them!
Advice
You must have a real passion for this type of work. Don't be afraid to ask questions to the nurses or charge nurses, they know it better than you.

Emergency Medical Technician
May 2016 • McKeesport, PA
What I liked
The diversity of the work. Some days you had your average medical calls for things like syncope (passing out), epistaxis (nosebleeds), cuts and bruises. Then there are days when you’ve got an overdose, or a stroke or you’re running through the park pushing patients on stretchers while people with chainsaws are running around scaring guests.

Nursing Assistant
June 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA
What I liked
I liked the hands on aspect of getting into a hospital and seeing how everything works first hand. I feel like just being in a hospital setting more often makes clinical, communicating with patients, families, and physicians a little more comfortable. I feel like I was a step ahead of learning too, in class.
What I wish was different
Honestly, nothing. I love my job and going to work. It is very flexible with nursing school and other extracurricular activities such as softball practices.
Advice
It is very manageable with being a full-time student, athlete, and many other aspects. It is a causal position I will hold throughout all of nursing school. Make sure to come prepared, eager to adapt and change based on the patents and their needs. The patient always comes first, be ready to be a good listener!

Student Nurse Intern
May - July 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA
What I liked
I was in the OR, which I loved in general. I was with my same preceptor from my summer course that was through Carlow, and because of this I already knew the staff and felt right at home. The staff was very welcoming and encouraging. I loved seeing operations every day and advocating for the patients.
What I wish was different
Maybe a few 12 hour days instead of five 8 hour days and seeing more trauma surgeries
Advice
If an opportunity pops up in your life, take it! For myself, I do not get a clinical rotation in the Operating room, which I found to love. If it either an experience that may not come again or even something just for the experience itself, do it! You will not regret it. An internship will help you stand out on your resume, looks amazing, and gives you more experience. Highly recommend!

Research Assistant
June 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA
What I liked
You're given a great deal of independence in your work and flexibility schedule-wise. Work can be different every day and almost always engaging.
What I wish was different
Wish there would have been more benefits - volunteers get free parking and meal passes but externs do not. Also wish that the specific responsibilities of the job were outlined more clearly beforehand. I would have liked to work with patients instead of sitting at a computer the whole time.
Advice
Keep your options open with regards to which lab you work in. Some labs offer benefits and different responsibilities (e.g., data entry vs patient interaction).
