Tufts University

Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Medford, MA

What I liked

I liked that the summer research program was catered to diversity, opportunity, and mentoring.

What I wish was different

There is not much that I wish had been different, at least nothing that could be controlled, such as the cold weather.

Advice

My number one piece of advice would to value the power of a network. Taking the time to be grateful for the opportunity to be in a research environment can greatly impact how you view your career life and academic pursuits.

Digital Design Studio Assistant

August 2018 • Medford, MA

What I liked

It's a very relaxed work environment where I can do homework or other personal projects, especially because a lot of software and equipment I would use to create these projects are right in the studio. I really enjoy the opportunity to expose myself to useful technology, troubleshoot, and answer questions, as well as connect with customers by being friendly and as helpful as possible.

What I wish was different

My only ongoing complaint might be that the room is heavily air conditioned and I was not always prepared to sit in there for hours in my summer outfits! I also did not receive a very formal training, only a tour and a quick orientation about my immediate duties. I'm not expected to be proficient with every piece of equipment or software, so it's understandable that each new situation is a learning moment, but I wish I could be more prepared to help customers with unique problems like video digitization. That being said, that's not exactly within my job responsibilities and I usually have supervisors to look to for those issues.

Advice

There are so many areas of digital media that it is useful to gain experience in, and if you have been meaning to learn a certain software or practice I suggest you take some time out of your work shift at the DDS to learn them! It's very much a perk that you have the time and immediate resources to learn film production, Adobe Suite, media conversion, and more, as a student at Tufts and especially as an employee at the DDS.
