KVOA-TV

Quintern

August - December 2020 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I liked being able to write digital content stories for the producers as well as being able to communicate with co-workers who were willing to help me and give feedback throughout my internship.

What I wish was different

The fact that it was online for the first time was a bit of a challenge as it was supposed to be an in person internship. Other than that the experience was great.

Advice

Always have a positive attitude.

News Room Intern

August 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

The atmosphere was very inviting to me, as a new member of the news team. I was able to write stories and go out with reporters to learn the craft of interviewing in a professional setting.

What I wish was different

I wish there was an easier way to see what I could be doing on any given day. I had to seek stuff to do at some points by asking reporters, producers etc... If they had a list of tasks interns could do that would be great. But overall it was an awesome experience.

Advice

You have to want to do well at this internship, they won't just hand it to you. I saw many interns sitting around for their entire shift, which is just wasted time. We only get two four hour shifts a week, make the most of them. Talk to people, ask them if they need help, ask to write stories and ask to shoot standups for your reel.

broadcast intern

August - December 2017 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

KVOA gave a wide range of tasks and projects to do throughout the semester, from running prompter to writing a VO, I feel like I was never board.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had some variation in my hours. I was the 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday Thursday intern and there were times I wished I had seen the office in full swing not just night mode. During the day there are more people in the office, meeting go on between producers, and stories are being built. By 6 p.m. most of the days big stories have already been broken and you are mostly checking for updates for smaller stories.

Advice

I would suggest to not be shy, in broadcast you will get the stories you go for. Meeting the staff and engaging in the newsroom was one of my favorite parts of the internship. Its easy to sit back and listen, but when you get involved it all gets a lot more fun.
