Theisen's Home Farm Auto

Cashier

June 2017 - August 2018 • Maquoketa, IA

What I liked

I liked the skills I gained as a result. I had to learn how to become assertive and direct, and how to communicate with customers so that their experience with Theisen's was optimal.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been less nepotism. Sadly, I was hired because of a small-town mentality. I was related to the right people, so my resume was given special consideration. While I appreciate the job, I think nepotism is a common form of corruption, and am sure there were others more qualified than me.

Advice

Do not be timid. If you have social anxiety or are shy, cashiering can be a struggle. Customers are generally kind to new employees, however. If someone is impatient with you or treats you with disrespect, realize that this does not reflect on you as a person. Simply do your job and treat the customer with respect (even though they have not deemed you worthy of theirs). Remember, you will likely never see many of these customers again. Be friendly, but do not take anything said cruelly to heart.
