Student Researcher

May 2018 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I enjoyed learning how to perform different analytical techniques and being able to apply coursework to real, meaningful research.

What I wish was different

I wish I learned more about the analysis part of research.

Advice

A key to research is having a full understanding of what you're actually doing. Sure, you can be handed a protocol and perform the procedure, but to actually know why you're using a certain reagent or heating a sample at a certain temperature is what really matters.

Technical Consultant

August 2016 - December 2017 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

The best job on campus for students. Competitive pay, flexible hours, ability to do homework- what can be worse? I worked over four jobs on campus ranging from the recreational department, highland market, and bookstores, but this job really felt right to me as a student.

What I wish was different

Nothing really. There is a great support system from the admin. office whenever you need help, and there are alot of projects on D2l you must take to be competent to help the clients.

Advice

There is a lot of responsibility as a consultant since there is no direct supervision, since the computer labs are all around campus.

Laboratory Research Assistant

May - August 2017 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

The internship gave me hands-on experience in a lab setting allowing me to see what the research and development side of materials science engineering was like in a comfortable and friendly environment. I was able to gain useful real life skills and techniques I could apply to future classes while in a team setting. It helped me a tremendous amount with future job opportunities.

What I wish was different

I didn’t have any experience with being able to make connections in industry because it was a research setting so it was very isolated and focused on keeping the interns interested in completeing a masters or PhD program instead of working in industry.

Advice

Do not hesitate to ask questions and try to work on as many projects as possible. Being as hands-on as possible ended up getting me two future internships.

Garden Intern

January - December 2017 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I liked the support of meeting in class, the workshop, and hearing about everyone's experiences at different sites.

What I wish was different

I wish all the interns had gotten more suggestions for how to communicate with teachers, such as an initial classroom observation form with questions to think about.

Advice

Work with a teacher to develop and teach your own lesson,`even if you think it will be difficult. You don't have to write your own lesson plan because there are so many on the internet.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - September 2018 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I loved having the opportunity to design an online curriculum for a class I had not taken previously. It was a unique and eye-opening experience that helped me improve as a professional.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had the ability to build on this opportunity and continue working as a Research Assistant with my professor, however as my job was solely to help design a class, it will not continue after the class is completed.

Advice

If you are ever given a chance to work directly with an esteemed professor, make sure to maintain communication. Building strong professional relationships is essential for the start of your career!

Advice

I would definitely recommend that students pick up a job on campus related to their field. The hours are flexible and the experience is unlike any you can get in class.

Intramural Sports Official

August 2015 - May 2016 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

The friendship with other intramural officials, since it was a difficult job.

What I wish was different

In the beginning, there was a forced ranking system (which was removed later on due to criticism) where supervisors ranked intramural officials every two weeks and posted them in public. This resulted in motivation loss and embarrassment for the lower ranking officials who already had to deal with the stress that came from participants.

Advice

The nature of the job involves a lot of criticism and pressure from both the participants and the supervisor. If you are able to withhold it, do the job, but there are many jobs around campus which you work in a better environment. Liking the sport is one thing, officiating the sport is another.

Cancer Researcher

June - August 2018 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

Learning different laboratory techniques and building my academic resume.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change anything about my summer research job!

Advice

I would say, if something catches your interest like research or an internship, then apply and go for it. Don't be afraid to try something new even if you think you don't have enough experence. I came into this research position with zero research experience and I loved it.
