The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police

Intern

May - September 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I loved being able to actually do the work the officers were doing. There were very few moments where I was told I had to stay in the car, or not go in somewhere. I would say a total of 4 times. Ever other time I was allowed to assist in arrests, help at crime scenes, and speak openly with officers about cases throwing around ideas. It was a very healthy, safe and fast paced environment to intern in.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to see more aspects of policing, but due to major riots and threats against police officers the internship was put on hold for about 3 weeks and it took away a lot of what we could do.

Advice

Always be open to going outside of your comfort zone and making mistakes. Everyone does and even if it is serious you will learn from it and be able to move on.
