Summer Research Intern

May - August 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I gained incredibly valuable experience of what it would actually be like to work in a lab full time. I saw the behind the scenes of what it takes to run a translational human cancer genetics lab, which can’t be fully understood from just articles or job reviews.

What I wish was different

I wished I had more time to work on the projects I started- by the time I’d nearly mastered all of the lab techniques required to perform my work, my internship was over!

Advice

Never be afraid to ask for anything. Always reach out and advocate for yourself- create your own opportunities and don’t feel like you need to wait for something to come along.

The relationship I formed with the floor, the hands on experience and the nursing view of how to prioritize responsibilities and patient care, and advancing my skills.

What I wish was different

Maybe being longer, such as 10 weeks instead of 8), or more shifts a week but not 12 hours, but overall no complaints and a great experience.

Advice

Networking is everything, use who you know and then use that opportunity to work hard and prove yourself capable of working in that role.
