The Children's Playhouse

Program Assistant / Clean Team

August - December 2021 • Boone, NC

What I liked

I love the staff at The Playhouse, and I’ve enjoyed being to interact with families of diverse backgrounds during day-to-day operations! I’ve appreciated the flexibility of scheduling and how easy it has been to request time off or switch shifts with coworkers in order to meet my educational, familial, and personal needs. Kathy and Ellen are incredibly kind and compassionate, and my coworkers are so much fun to work with. I feel like my skills and abilities are valued and appreciated each day, and I am constantly learning new things. The only reason I am leaving is because I am moving away from Boone for my graduate school internship. I am so grateful to have been a part of The Children’s Playhouse!

What I wish was different

The pay periods are run monthly, vs bi-weekly at many jobs; I assume this is because The Playhouse is a nonprofit. This isn’t really an issue, especially if you’re smart with your money, but it does take some getting used to if you are used to being paid more frequently. Otherwise, I cannot think of a single thing that I wish to be different. I’ve appreciated having flexible scheduling, being given opportunities to work different roles and special events, and being valued as a member of the team.

Advice

The one thing I would advise to future team members is to have fun. You get to work and interact with some amazing people (and fish!), and while things (toys and art supplies) can get messy sometimes, it’s a really fun job. If you love being around children, I recommend applying to be a Program Assistant. If you like to clean in a more quiet environment, the Clean Team position is right for you. I work and enjoy both positions!
