The Albert M. Higley Co.

Intern

January - May 2022 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The team was professional and nice. They treated me as an equal and gave me important jobs that were challenging. I learned lots from the tasks that were given to me and from the people I was surrounded with.

What I wish was different

I only wish that I was able to come into the office or jobsites to be more in person. I was working from school so that was hard but I still felt very much at home with my co workers as they were great to me.

Advice

Be a sponge and learn all that you can from your co workers! They are very knowledgeable people in the industry and good resources. There's no such thing as a dumb question.

Project Engineer Intern / Scheduling Intern

May 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

What I liked the most working at A.M. Higley was the culture, work atmosphere, and enthusiastic environment that encouraged me to work every day with a feeling of excitement. I feel that A.M. Higley truly values their employees and that they really wanted to guide me along my journey to become a Project Engineer. While working on several projects with a Project Engineer and Superintendent, I always felt that my efforts working as an intern made a significant difference to the project success and to the overall company. My coworkers offered great leadership during my introduction to Construction Management, and I enjoyed the one-on-one mentorship in the field as well as my experience working in scheduling, which also gave me a better understanding how an entire construction project unfolds. I was exposed to several different managing styles from Project Managers, Superintendents, and Project Engineers, which helped me to learn many different aspects of the construction process and how to effectively communicate with each trade. I learned to overcome barriers through collaborative and effective thinking and was able to oversee a broad range of construction projects in greater Cleveland. I'm now excited to take what I learned from my previous position as an intern and work as a full-time employee as a Project Engineer with The Albert M. Higley Company!

What I wish was different

I would have liked to be more involved in the construction process during my initial co-op experiences. It wasn't until later during my internship that I slowly attained the understanding of the whole construction process from start to finish. I feel it was after I became more involved in the scheduling department that really highlighted the intricate details to managing a successful construction project. Now, with my background and experience in construction, I feel better prepared to take on the next challenges ahead!!

Advice

My one piece of advice would be to "Never Stop Learning!" Working at A.M. Higley has opened up so many opportunities for me to achieve great things and see so many different aspects of construction. During my co-op experience, I always tried to be eager to learn something new either in project management or on the jobsite while also be willing to learn from my own mistakes. If you can overcome your failures, stay focused, and quickly turnaround to achieving your goals, you can succeed in anything through hard work and determination. My best advice is to work with integrity, maintain positive relationships, and learn from every possible experience you can!

Project engineer

January - August 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

The team and project I was located on allowed me to expand and grow on my already existing knowledge I have gained through previous internship experiences.

What I wish was different

Although I received a full time offer, I was unable to accept due to personal reasons and me moving to another state. I truly enjoyed working for the company and wish I could have changed me moving.

Advice

Always try and step into new roles that you may find challenging or make you nervous upon hearing about them. Under pressure is where you find out who you truly are and what you can become.
