I like that I am getting hands on experience in research. I also like that there is growth, I went from helping a grad student complete their research to doing my own. Additionally, I’m learning a lot about the subject. It has genuinely become more interesting as time goes by.
What I wish was different
There is nothing I would change other than there should be more available spots.
Advice
I would say take any research opportunity offered on campus, it is worth it. Try to get a research experience by junior year since you’re chances will be higher since you’re still an undergrad. Usually the professors want you to intrigued by the study and to at least help in the lab for a year.
Remember if you’re doing research try your best to read the material they provide on the subject.

What I liked
I liked the patience that the supervisors took to make sure I was getting everything. Whenever there would be a mistake made it was more of a learning experience rather than feeling guilty over something, they truly made me feel more confident about my desicions.
What I wish was different
I wish there would have been more people that were willing to work together in a team. When you have more than 1 person that does not contribute to the team it can be really easy to put everyone else behind.
Advice
You will make mistakes everywhere you go, we are not all perfect, the difference is, are you going to learn from it and become better or you will let it consume you and keep you from reaching your goals.

What I liked
I like that my employer is very flexible with my schedule and is always putting me as a student first. I also like what I am doing a lot. While I may not work in a career services office once I graduate, I do know that my skills will easily transfer to any entry level job at a company.
What I wish was different
Personally I think that this office has taught me a lot about things that will happen commonly in the workforce. I do not think that my internship could have been any different.
Advice
Just be willing to learn in any internship because you do not know what it is truly like in the real world. At this stage in our careers we need to realize that we really only have an academic understanding of our major. Going in with an open mind will really help enhance your internship experience.

What I wish was different
Everything was great there was not really anything I would change, everyone is so caring and helpful and will help you achieve the goals we need.
Advice
Be open to try new things, and if you have a chance to try out a job in your field of study while you study, its a great way to see yourself doing that career or not.

Put your heart into it and make it fun! Don't be a stranger to the people in your lab because they're going to be your new bffs for while. Don't be afraid to admit to mistakes, and ask for help. Just make it fun but work hard and efficiently.

Research Assistant

What I liked
Being a research assistant was a fun experience, and being able to do it as an undergraduate student was great. Many of the times research is only done by graduate level students, so to get the chance to experience how it is to do research before graduating was huge. What I liked the most about the experience was being able to work on a project that was interesting to me and get the chance to meet new people at a different institution. Most would assume that doing research is hard and boring but when you work on something you enjoy, it never gets boring. Having a mentor to walk you through the project and also getting insights to potential graduate school resources can be very helpful as an undergraduate.
What I wish was different
I wish I could of gotten more time to work on my project, however, summer is only so long and before I knew it my time at tamucc was over. Being a part of this REU has definitely motivated me to go to graduate school and maybe even work on other research projects in the future.
Advice
Just because you do not know much about a job or an opportunity should not mean you should be scared to apply, before this, I had never done any sort of official research projects of this magnitude, so I felt very scared and thought that maybe I was under prepared. I could not have been more wrong, once I started actually working it was not as bad and it became very clear that all my fears were for nothing.
