Customer Service

June 2019 • Roswell, GA

What I liked

I love my job! It was supposed to just be a summer job, but I ended up staying. My coworkers are all great people, and my job gets me off my feet and gets me talking to people. You meet a lot of diverse characters-and do a lot of hard work at times. They work around your schedule the best they can.

What I wish was different

Management changed, and with it the dynamics at work changed. A lot of us started getting less hours, and don’t feel as though we’re given much thought.

Advice

If you want a summer job, there’s so many options! It’s a good way to save up money for the fall, and make some connections, do some networking. It gets you out of the house and is good practice for a full time job.

Deli Clerk

June - August 2018 • Costa Mesa, CA

What I liked

I appreciated the challenging atmosphere and opportunity to expand on customer service skills. I also enjoyed the employee discount.

What I wish was different

I wish it weren't as physically demanding and I resented the late closing shifts.

Advice

I don't know if I would say I enjoyed this job, but even though it isn't my ideal career choice I was able to learn more about myself while working at a grocery store. If you ever find yourself in a challenging job which you don't enjoy, you don't have to stay there forever (this was just a one-time summer job for me, and I do not intend on returning) but you can definitely still learn a lot.

Cashier

May 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

- Work flexbility - I knew management from previously working their the Summer before - Co-workers were happy to be there - Memorizing the food PLU codes (I love memorizing numbers which is why I am interested in accountancy)

What I wish was different

I wish there was more space behind the register. Maybe not sharing the small space with another cashier behind my back would have helped this out. Also, some customers were impatient with my services, even though I was a really fast cashier.

Advice

Be prepared to stand for3-4 hours at a time before you get a 15-30 break/lunch. Your back will definitely ache.

Bakery Clerk

April 2018 • Gilbert, AZ

What I liked

Sprouts has a very friendly market of customers. Our customers are extremely kind and patient. Along with that, the team members themselves are all very pleasant to work with. It makes it all worth it! Something else that I love about my place of work is our commitment to providing healthy, affordable foods from local communities.

What I wish was different

Although working a lot of hours during the summer is great for saving up money, I wish I would've dedicated more time for travel and leisure. I believe that taking "self-help" time is very important for everyone's mental health.

Advice

Having a part-time, LOW STRESS job during college can be very beneficial in many ways. Besides making a little bit of money for savings or to have a little bit of spending money is wonderful; along with this, it is a great resume builder, gives you real life work experience, and can lead you to form friendships and even some helpful business connections for the future. With this in mind, it is EXTREMELY important to find your right balance. Don't be afraid to tell your boss that you need less hours because your school work is always the most important.
