Deli Clerk

June - August 2018 • Costa Mesa, CA

What I liked

I appreciated the challenging atmosphere and opportunity to expand on customer service skills. I also enjoyed the employee discount.

What I wish was different

I wish it weren't as physically demanding and I resented the late closing shifts.

Advice

I don't know if I would say I enjoyed this job, but even though it isn't my ideal career choice I was able to learn more about myself while working at a grocery store. If you ever find yourself in a challenging job which you don't enjoy, you don't have to stay there forever (this was just a one-time summer job for me, and I do not intend on returning) but you can definitely still learn a lot.

head cashier

May 2016 • Suwanee, GA

What I liked

The hours are flexible and the atmosphere is laid back. The people are friendly and earnest.

What I wish was different

For the amount of time I spent with this company and the hard work I poured in, I believe I could have been compensated a little better for it. There is a notable lack of opportunities for upward mobility as well.

Advice

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and apply for jobs even if you're content where you are. There will always be an employer willing to treat you better.

I liked working with people and learning more about organic foods.

What I wish was different

Advice

If you are to work here, which it is a great place, pick a department other than front end.

Bakery Clerk

May - August 2021 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I liked seeing the accomplishment of producing lots of baked goods, and I liked learning new responsibilities that I previously hadn't had, which taught me valuable skills like time management.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been more people to help in the bakery, as we were often short-handed.

Advice

To not be afraid to try something new. I came into the job with no experience in baking and came out of it with lots of new skills, and due to committing myself to the job I was able to succeed in it.

Cashier

June - August 2021 • Westlake Village, CA

What I liked

Loved the people who worked here! The head cashiers and managers are very supportive and it was a fun environment to work in. My supervisors ALWAYS made sure I took my 15 minute break every 2 hours.

What I wish was different

More relevant and efficient training. There were a lot of topics that did not apply to my position and took 5 shifts.

Advice

It's overwhelming at first but you quickly learn the items and gain confidence. Just act like you know what you're doing (and check with your head cashier).

What I wish was different

I wish I was raised to a different position from a courtesy clerk.

Advice

Say good morning to customers and employees, try not to be too serious when working, but when you have to be make sure you are. Do your job better than the person next to you it shows. complementing people throughout the day and being vigilant with who you are working with because you get daily customers, so knowing their name makes their day. Try to be flexible with your boss.
