Shell USA, Inc.

Marketing Analytics Intern

June - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I really liked being able to work with a small team and regularly receive feedback. My mentors made time for me to ensure I would make deadlines.

What I wish was different

The locations for interns is not ideal. Interns are essentially limited to Texas and Louisiana.

Advice

Microsoft Excel is a must for any interested interns.

Petrophysics and Geomechanics Intern

May - August 2022 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I really enjoyed the freedom I was given with this internship. I was handed a project which I had no experience with and was tasked with figuring out how to overcome a challenge. I was able to communicate with stakeholders across the entire company and even with other companies to determine a solution to an issue. It was extremely beneficial for learning how to build a network and gather resources to complete a task without micromanaging.

What I wish was different

I wish I had knowledge of the project details before arriving at Shell, I would have been able to prepare beforehand and been able to have a better grasp of foreign concepts prior to my first day.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask for help, you are not expected to know everything. At companies such as Shell or other large companies, you are surrounded by subject matter experts and they are all willing to help you grasp difficult concepts that you may not understand. You don't have to know everything.

Accounting/Finance Intern

May - August 2019 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I really liked that I was given a project that I was 100% responsible for, from beginning to end. The 9/80 work weeks were really good, too. They offered a lot of flexibility on working from home as necessary. The program is very structured and tailored.

What I wish was different

I don't really have anything else I could recommend to Shell; it was really scary to be just "tossed in," but I think floundering a little and being challenged made me better in the end. Everyone was really, really helpful and welcoming.

Advice

Always ask questions, don't be afraid to do so. You won't look stupid, I promise. Just ask your manager/supervisor how they best prefer questions be brought to them (ie all at once, as they come up, etc)

What I wish was different

I wish that their internship program was a bit more structured and there were more opportunities to connect with other interns.

Business Performance Analyst Intern

May - August 2017 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I was tasked with real, substantial projects throughout the summer and was able to off-board knowing that I definitely contributed true value to my team. My supervisor maintained very open, honest, and respectful communication with me throughout the summer, meeting with me formally weekly and informally daily to ensure I was making progress, to answer any questions I had, and to find opportunities for me to fulfill my goals for the summer. Also, the overall company culture is amazing! People there are all so open-minded, friendly, and willing to help, and I especially appreciated their focus on diversity and inclusion throughout the organization.

What I wish was different

Honestly nothing.

Advice

Be honest with your supervisor! The more you share with him/her about your career interests and goals and expectations for the summer, the more you'll truly enjoy the projects you're given. Also, if you need help, do not be afraid to ask!
