Strength and Conditioning Coach Intern

What I liked

I loved being able to teach students of middle and high school ages how to properly lift and fuel the body. Being able to educate and assist students in making and achieving their fitness goals was a great experience.

What I wish was different

Only thing I would change is my hour drive in the morning. Otherwise, no complaints.

Advice

If you are personable and you want to grow as a person and provide, get this internship and take in every learning opportunity you can.

Nursing Intern

What I liked

The experience was amazing. I learned so much in my short 10-weeks there and it helped build my confidence up as a future nurse so much. I got to practice so many different skills and also try so many new things. By the end of the summer I was basically handling 4 patients by myself, and my preceptor simply was at the nurses station for if I needed help.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have experienced a few more different floors. I mainly worked on the cardiology/heart hospital floor. I got to do one shift in the E.R and one in the NICU, along with several shifts in the ICU. But I would have loved to get to explore and experience other areas as well.

Advice

Go into it ready to learn and don’t be afraid. Be open, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to fail. Everybody starts somewhere and nobody is perfect,

Great opportunity to practice your nursing skills and become familiar with the flow of a typical hospital day. I became much more confident in patient care settings and gained an extreme amount of experience that puts me at ease to being out in the real world in a couple months.

I work in the Rehab area of the Neilson Place Long Term Care Center, so I liked to form bonds with people and see them make progress towards being more independent as they worked to get back in to daily living.

IT-QA and Testing Intern

What I liked

I liked how each day felt different and I was always learning something new. I also liked that I felt like I was an important part of the team despite being only an intern.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have looked into the internship more before signing up or even signing up for a different position as QA and Testing turned out to not be for me. I wish that I would have connected with other departments to shadows some things that would be more up my alley.

Advice

Even though QA and Testing turned out to not be my thing, I still gained a lot of experience out of it and was still determined to do my best even when things were difficult. So my advice is, every moment matters, even this one.

What I liked

I loved the opportunity it provided me. During my experience I worked one-on-one with another nurse. At this time I would have a full patient load that I would work with. I really enjoyed being able to work in a setting that would not only enhance my skills but prepared me for what life was like as a nurse.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship had started earlier in May for more experience. I truly had the best time and a wonderful nurse preceptor.

Advice

I think that it is a really smart idea to have an internship. I felt more confident this year at school from what I learned. I also was able to see things that we normally would not see in the clinical setting during school.

Biomedical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with. Sanford Health felt like a family. Anyone would take time out of their day to help you if you needed it or if you had questions.

What I wish was different

I wish it would have been slightly more hands on from an engineering perspective, but the internship gave me a unique experience that will genuinely stand out on my resume when I am inevitably compared to other engineers in a interview setting.

Advice

Connect with people. In my experience, people truly want to help you, so let them. An internship is a fantastic way to get your foot in the door at a company you admire and to network with people in your field. Take advantage of this setting as you are only in it for a short while!

What I liked

I liked how involved we became on the floor we worked on. My preceptor was constantly getting me involved in patient procedures and assessments.

What I wish was different

I wish we did not have to spend so much time in the classroom, or have to leave the floor to go to class.

Advice

I would advise someone to take advantage of the flex shifts they offer in order to gain experience on other floors as well.

What I liked

I enjoyed the nurse I spent the summer with, she was very kind. I felt like I learned a lot throughout the 10 weeks I had spent in the internship. I became a lot more confident in my nursing skills due to the given independence I had received. I also liked that it was a paid experience.

What I wish was different

I wish there was not as much class time, I did not learn anything from the classes that hadn't already been taught in nursing school. I felt that there was a large amount of assignments. While I understand that reflecting journals can be beneficial, I felt that there was a little too much "class time". The orientation to the internship was way too long. Multiple topics that were covered were not necessary, for instance: as a new intern I do not need to spend an hour looking at Sanfords past 10 years of CAUTI rates. This is not going to change the way I practice. Spending an hour learning different ways to prevent CAUTI's, would be much more informational.

Advice

For a future intern, I would say apply to a unit that you think would be the best experience for you. A lot of my classmates compared where everyone was applying, and I chose floors to apply to based on what others said they thought would be a good experience. I ended up getting hired into the position that I wanted, however it could have been less of an experience if I had been hired into the position I was told to appy to because it would not have been as enjoyable!

Advice

Be friendly and get to know your bosses in a large setting like a hospital. They can help in ways you may not even know. If its a job that will help your future, then try to learn as much as you can!
