Ross Stores, Inc.

Buying Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

During the internship I was treated as a full time employee rather than just an intern. My boss expected me to perform the tasks of an actual assistant buyer, which made the experience more real. Each week I also had the opportunity to present my findings within the business to upper management. This opportunity was a great mixture of professional development and real world job experience.

What I wish was different

Nothing, it was a great learning experience.

Advice

Be humble. This company does not expect you to know everything, they want you to make mistakes and learn from them.

Assitant Buyer Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I learned so much about the business of the retail industry, which was super out of my comfort zone! I have always had an interest in retail, but this specific sector of the industry was new to me. I was able to work on my communication, organization, and management skills, while building a brand new skillset. I learned how to craft excel spreadsheets, run reports, analyze important consumer data, create valuable and meaningful vendor relationships, along with product research.

What I wish was different

I struggled a bit with the concepts that I was learning, but when we had to work on our individual projects, I had an "ah hah" moment that made things a lot more clear. I was able to get a better grasp on my roles and goals within the company. I wish I had that breakthrough moment a little earlier!

Advice

Really push yourself to understand difficult concepts; don't be afraid to ask for help!

Merchandise Planning Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the company culture and the hands on experiences. I also appreciated the three week training that prepared us to work the same job roles as full time employees.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had some more information on what the specific job roles entailed in regards to buying versus planning. I had no previous knowledge of these positions before hand and getting more information about them would have been incredibly beneficial during the interview process.

Advice

I found myself doubting my capabilities a few times during the course of the internship. I realized that it is really important to give yourself time to get acclimated to the new work environment, new city etc. Don't expect everything to fall into place and feel just right on day one of the internship.

March 2016 - August 2018 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunities to move up within the company.

What I wish was different

I wish that the particular store that I worked at was just better organized or at least if everyone could be on the same page all the time.

Advice

Ross gets a ton of business which is good and bad for the employees. Make sure you give yourself a break from work if you can every once in a while because things can get a little overwhelming and tiresome.

Buying Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The training was great and truly prepared you for the tasks of an intern. It was great exposure to the real responsibilities of a buyer, as we were even asked to develop a business growth plan.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had known what department I was going to be placed in when they gave me the offer.

Advice

Definitely take this opportunity if you are serious about buying. It is great experience and has prepared me tremendously for the industry, but you will only get out as much as you put in. When you have to develop a business growth plan, don't put it off until the end of the internship; start working as soon as it is introduced so that you can be best informed. This presentation has a large impact on your chances of receiving a return offer.

Location Planning Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My team was extremely helpful and friendly. They made themselves available whenever I needed help. I loved that I got a glimpse of what a typical day in the workforce would be like. Overall, the experience helped me realize what I wanted or did not want to do in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish my commute was a little easier, as I traveled by train from Princeton, NJ to New York City every day. It took many hours out of my day and left me exhausted every night. On some days, I was so tired that it affected my performance.

Advice

I always say that it's extremely important to remain open-minded. The biggest lesson I learned from my internship was that there was something for me to learn from everyone. Even if I didn't work particularly well with that person, I could still learn from them. As interns, that's the most important thing we can do - stay humble and absorb everything. It's one of the last times you'll be expected to learn and not to just KNOW what you're supposed to do.

Location Planning Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Experience in the discount retail industry, hands-on experience with forecasting tools, interaction with senior management

What I wish was different

More diversity in intern pool, more structured days instead of wandering around looking for busy work, commuters reimbursement (since many students received housing reimbursement but only if they were significantly far from the city), more intern interaction and bonding

Advice

You need to have interest in the role and experience (rather than making connections and making money) because the company does not offer much besides the experience of actually working in the retail industry

Retail Leader Intern

May - August 2018 • Deptford Township, NJ

What I liked

Enjoyed learning from Ross Leadership on how to independently manage and lead daily store operations. Learned about company operations as a whole, having phone calls with corporate and working with Loss Prevention and District Management. Completed a store analysis on the “Wins” and “Opportunities” and presented the findings to the zone’s leadership team

What I wish was different

Had daily interaction with the interns in my store, but would have liked more interaction with the other interns in the zone as well

Advice

Must enjoy working with people and teams as well as being in a retail environment. Company wants you to succeed, overall great internship program!

Location Planning Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved working with a diverse group of employees and interns. We were able to attend classes all throughout the internship to continue our learning and engaging in the agenda of truly being a student of the business. The work environment was fun and inviting as well. It truly made me want to be more engaged and work as hard as I possibly could.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been longer, I truly loved working there. Most of the interns also wished there was more intern events that we would go to as a group so that we could engage and communicate outside of the work place walls.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share is definitely to push yourself. I had never been to New York City before and was apprehensive about moving there on my own for the summer, but I am so happy I took the leap and went for it. It was an incredible opportunity and and amazing networking experience.

Location Planning Analyst Intern

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

A really good company that wants to educate it's interns and grow it's employees. I always felt as though I was part of the team.

What I wish was different

I personally didn't like sitting at a desk all day long, and I wish they had the planning interns just as busy as the buying interns. We told HR this and they seemed to take it into consideration, so it may be better come next summer.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up! Ross welcomes innovation, and they do value their intern's opinions. If you have an idea for a project or a different way to look at something, don't be afraid to tell somebody.
