Medical Scribe

March - September 2018 • Corpus Christi, TX

What I liked

I loved the experience. The physicians I scribed for were wonderful, willing to teach, and had very good advice to give.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to stay working while in Nursing school because I would be practicing my TC skills more.

Advice

Don’t give up. At first, it can be overwhelming due to all the typing and charting but you’ll get better with practice. Dont get discouraged.

What I liked

Working in the ER at Saint John's Medical Center has been fantastic! As a scribe, I get to look into each patient's past medical history, assist the physicians with the Electronic Medical Record, and even accompany the physicians into the rooms to interact with the patients. It's a great experience for pre-med students, made even better by the other scribes who share many of the same interests.

What I wish was different

It took about 2 months to get all the HR and training things out of the way. Learning to scribe takes a while, but once you get the hang of it, it's actually kind of fun. I only wish that I had been more personable with the physicians while I was in training so I could make a better first impression, but as I've worked more I've developed much better relationships with all of them. There's just so many, and they're always so busy that it's a little hard to strike up a conversation with them. But they're all pretty nice

Advice

Apply early! Like I said, the HR stuff takes a while to get through, and then the online and clinical training to be a scribe is a bit intensive, so make sure you have time for this. And once you become a scribe, don't be afraid to ask the physicians questions! Most of them are happy to share stories or info with the scribes. Overall, I highly recommend the job.

Emergency Department Medical Scribe

December 2017 • Kerrville, TX

What I liked

Direct hands on patient care experience, as well as direct personal insight into medical decision making by ER physicians.

What I wish was different

none

Advice

If you are a pre-med student this is an invaluable opportunity to see and be a part of real medicine. It gives you a chance to experience first hand the steps that a doctor goes through when seeing and treating a patient that no other shadowing experience or internship can give you. If you have the time and opportunity to become a medical scribe do it, you won't regret it.
