Was an interesting experience for anyone who hasn't been out in the wok world, or someone who has only had jobs related to their major. Really brings you closer to the people who aren't in college, and do not have the same opportunities as you.

What I wish was different

For what we did, people have told me that the pay was a little less than it should have been.

Try working different jobs like this more often, it builds character.

What I liked

I got to spend my days with some amazing kids. I learned what the after school schedule needed to be for twin kindergarteners and a preschooler. These kids made this job the best one yet.

What I wish was different

These children grew up differently and it made it difficult sometimes when they asked me questions. I didn’t want to teach them things and their parents not agree.

Advice

Kids are so much fun, but when they act out, they need to learn. Eventually they learn and will stop acting out. It definitely requires patience, but it’s worth it for those kids to learn and develop into good people.

What I liked

I loved being able to work with these individuals on reaching goals and becoming more independent. There was a lot of joy in their triumphs! On community outings, I was able not only to help the individuals build functional skills, but bring awareness to others on what an individual with special needs looks like and all the many things they are capable of. It was heartwarming to see workers at restaurants, gyms, and other locations start to talk to the individuals when I prompted them to. Educating through experience on both ends was truly a highlight.

What I wish was different

I wish that my schedule would have allowed me to continue in the position during school.

Advice

When working with these individuals, look at them as human beings who have many gifts, talents, and intelligence of their own. When they know you care about them, then it becomes really easy to have them comply to the tasks you ask them to do.

I like working outside and being active, and getting to work creatively when applicable.

I enjoy my job very much, though I wish for more stability since it is weather dependent.

Advice

I would advise gardeners to learn plant and tree identification for young plants and saplings to be able to distinguish them when weeding and pruning.
