US Medical Affairs Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to be in New York City, with one of the largest companies in the country working in their headquarters. It was very exciting to, while an intern, still be around a lot of people close to the very top. I also really enjoyed Pfizer's culture which was surprisingly laid back and very warm.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more resources to find housing, it was very stressful as I got the position last minute and NYC housing is crazy. It would have been great if they had offered housing or if Wofford had some sort of connection.

Advice

I would recommend applying early to have the best chance of getting in, and as much time as possible to prepare living arrangements, etc.

Maintenance Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Andover, MA

What I liked

First hand experience at a leading company in a cutting-edge field. I got to see which skills I was strong in and which skills I needed to further develop to be a stronger candidate for future applications and work in the industry (biopharmaceuticals/biotech). It was an extremely collaborative work environment so I had to really come out of my shell to get things done, which has directly translated to doing better in my classes this semester. I got to learn a lot of really interesting new techniques in drug manufacturing.

What I wish was different

I was relatively isolated compared to the other interns, who were in groups of 2-4 while I was the only intern in my building on the site. I found the silver lining in this to be I got to work with more developed professionals, rather than my work getting more colloquial by working with mostly students.

Advice

Make the most out of any opportunity you can get! Find out what's going on at the site and reach out to people to learn about it and get some experience. This was what I did with things that I was interested in (gene therapy drugs) and it was my favorite part of the internship.

Advice

It is important to seek out paid research position early during the school year. A lot of positions hire students on a rolling basis, so in certain circumstances applying in December may be too late.

International Children’s Advisory Network member

January 2015 • Ave Maria, FL

What I liked

The iCAN organization has greatly enhanced my knowledge of the medical field and specifically the research revolving around children. Every year each team works on their own projects, from collecting data to building useful technology for those in need. During each summer, the teams join together at an international iCAN conference to share and gain knowledge and results with the other teams. Each team then takes that knowledge back home to their countries and states and towns to implement in their research for the next year. During these international conferences, the attendees are prívalaged to learn from expierienced people in each field of medicine from the country hosting the conference. This gives each attendee a fuller grasp of the world’s medical field and the different techniques which have been developed given the specific needs of the people.

What I wish was different

Advice

If given the opportunity to attend an international conference or any event with people more experienced than yourself, take advantage because the knowledge available out in the world is endless and people are more than willing to help spread the knowledge they have gained in order to assist in any way possible.
