Northwestern Mutual - Fairview Heights

Financial Representative

May - August 2017 • Savannah, GA

What I liked

Getting out in a business environment and seeing what the job of a financial rep was really like.

What I wish was different

Having more guidance and training time rather than being sent on your own.

Advice

Spend a lot of time researching all opportunities.

Financial representative intern

January - September 2015 • Mars, PA

What I liked

The company culture was incredible. Lots to learn but the environment was conducive to being successful

What I wish was different

The nature of the internship requires you to cal on your direct network which was fine. However, I would have preferred not to involve my family in my work

Advice

I recommend pursuing this internship if you have a desire to write your own ticket for success. It was very self driven. You will not succeed if you cannot motivate yourself.

Financial Representative

June 2018 • Janesville, WI

What I liked

I liked the freedom of creating your own schedule. I didn't have to clock in. I didn't have a boss breathing down my neck or anything like that. It's a very friendly environment that is very competitive at the same time. It also got me out of my comfort zone in a good way. You pretty much run your own show.

What I wish was different

I guess I wish the office was closer to where I live.

Advice

Get out of your comfort zone

Financial Representative

April - September 2019 • Pittsford, NY

What I liked

I truly enjoyed the learning experience of building my own financial planning practice. I became a licensed LAH NYS Insurance Agent and was able to build professional relationships with people I reached out to. I was given the freedom to go about my week as I chose to, build my own schedule, and decide for myself how and where I wanted to get work done. I felt welcomed into the friendly culture of the company and developed such great relationships.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have adapted quicker to rejection. In this business, rejection is unaviodable and being able to pick yourself up from rejection is truly so important. When starting out in this business, friends and family are the people that are first on the list to reach out to and if one is not comfortable doing that it can be awkward at first. As time went along I was able to get more comfortable making phone calls, but I wish I could have been more comfortable with it sooner in the summer.

Advice

One piece of advice I would strongly say about my experience is that if you can really see yourself wanting to make this business a career for yourself, do not get down on yourself when people say no to you and it seems impossible to make a sale. We are starting from the ground up and it takes a lot of effort to network, build relationships, ask for referrals and reach out to those referrals trying to schedule meetings. Nothing is guaranteed in this business, but there is such a need for committed financial advisors devoted to helping their clients reach their financial and personal life goals.
