I liked being able to make my own schedule and work at my own pace.
What I wish was different
I wish there had been more background information provided on the project before I started.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

What I liked
Summer research is a great opportunity to understand what it's like to work in a lab without having to juggle school work the way you would during the semester. I learned a lot and was able to develop and present a poster presentation.

What I liked
Flexibility to work on my free time around school and vacation.
What I wish was different

Advice
Work hard. If you are looking for a job to just submit hours, do not go into research. I easily worked 80 hours per week, but I loved it. Research takes dedication, and this is not a job for the typical student that wants spending money.

June 2019 • Socorro, NM
What I liked
I enjoyed that I could work up to full time hours but less if I wanted.
What I wish was different
There were a lot of postings around campus for positions that were no longer available, so it would be nice if those were taken down after the position was filled.
Advice
Make sure you follow up with prospective employers. Don't be afraid to send an email to check in with the hiring process.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

What I liked
I liked the independence of choosing my own research projects and methods.
What I wish was different
I wish I worked full-time as a researcher instead of only part-time, but funding was only available for a part-time position.
Advice
Talk to your professors and ask them about the research that they do. Many professors at NMT are willing to give undergraduates research experience and take them on as summer or continual research assistants.

Undergraduate Researcher for Materials Engineering Department
May 2019 • Socorro, NM
What I liked
I really enjoyed getting hands-on experience with equipment such as 3D printers, mechanical tester, lathe, etc. I also was fond of learning to conduct and alter experimental tests in regard to my own ongoing research project.
What I wish was different
As a materials undergraduate research group, it would be nice to get more training on machining equipment instead of relying on mechanical engineering groups to perform projects/jobs for us.
Advice
I would advise students to engage in research team discussions as much as possible. Do not hold back any input you may have. You are there to find solutions and help further the research with your team!
