What I liked

I really liked the work environment at Nationwide.

What I wish was different

Everything was great, I would not change anything. A lot of outreach events for interns, talks, and opportunities.

Advice

Always give the best of yourself and enjoy your time at internships.

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2018 • Des Moines, IA

What I liked

Very relaxed atmosphere. There was the right amount of work (not too much, not too little). Fantastic workplace and management. Plenty of opportunities to expand your knowledge of the insurance industry.

What I wish was different

Pay was slightly below expected. Deeper exposure to other areas of the business were largely on you to find. They set up 30 minute to 1 hour sessions in some areas but to really experience and understand an area more is needed. These are all pretty nit picky though and it was a really great experience overall though

Advice

Seek out associates in different departments to learn about their job as much as you can. Don’t hesitate to ask for anything because everyone is super friendly and helpful.

Product Intern

May - August 2018 • Grandview Heights, OH

What I liked

My experience at Nationwide was both valuable and memorable. Working closely with my mentor and manager, I worked on meaningful projects, gaining the analytical and data visualization skills and professional experience to earn a full-time position at the conclusion of my internship. I felt comfortable coming to anyone in our department for questions, and was offered additional opportunities for job shadows outside of the department in order to learn as much about the insurance industry as possible. At the conclusion of my internship, I felt as if I had the tools to succeed in a full-time role.

What I wish was different

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions! An internship is meant to be a learning experience; you are not expected to know everything!

What I wish was different

Experience heavily depended on mentor you were assigned to Some weeks had far too much down time

What I liked

The culture and people at Nationwide provide a welcoming environment that gives you all the tools you need to be successful in your position. The interns at Nationwide are given workshops that give insight to the many different operations within the company. Everyone is very intent on seeing you succeed and get the most out of your experience.

What I wish was different

Some departments work from home, making communication harder at times. Less downtime between given tasks

Advice

Be willing to learn and ask questions. Many tasks that are given may be new to you, but if you approach them with an open-mind you can learn a lot.

Software Application Developer

May - August 2018 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I loved the culture of Nationwide and learning environment that was created while I spent my time with the company. I left the company a far better developer than when I came in and that is something that I am extremely grateful for.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have taken some sort of databases course prior to going into work. It would've made an even easier transition than it already was from academic life to work life.

Advice

Connect with as many people as you can. Simply networking will open up so many doors for you, doors you might not have even known existed.
