Moss Adams

Assurance Intern

June - August 2023 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Many perks for the interns, great pay, good training for the real job skills, very approachable co-workers, fun social events.

What I wish was different

Given the slow season, it was often difficult for us interns to find work to do. We also found that staff members were somewhat reluctant to take the time to explain complex tasks to us when it would be faster to just do it themselves.

Advice

Be on time every day, even if there is little work to do. Ask a lot of questions. Keep pestering for tasks to do even when people seem to not have anything for you. Make lots of friends around the office.

What I liked

I liked the trainings at the beginnings as well as the client work. I felt like I got a good taste of the firm's culture along with the work it will entail.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more in person interaction with the other interns.

Advice

Plan far in advance.

Tax Intern

June - August 2021 • Stockton, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed how the experience at Moss Adams was tailored to the interns. They had very informative sessions regarding a variety of topics including working in the field, different employees' experiences, CPA licensure requirements, etc. It was overall a fun experience where you learn a lot about working in the accounting field.

What I wish was different

I wish we spent more time doing actual client work. Only about 3 weeks of the internship were spent on client work which was not enough to learn and get comfortable with the work.

What I liked

The people were incredibly kind and supportive.

What I wish was different

I wish that it was more in-person, but that is more of the fault of covid-19 and less on Moss Adams.

Advice

If you have the chance, take it!

Tax Intern

July - August 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I loved being able to connect with so many professionals across the firm, and they were all super enthusiastic to answer any and all questions I had.

What I wish was different

My 8 week internship offer turned into a 2 week virtual internship due to the pandemic, which was a disappointment, but Moss Adams made it work, and I was still able to make so many connections.

Advice

If you are going through a virtual internship make sure to network with your fellow interns as well as professionals! It's great to get to know people at the same place in their careers as you, but it's hard to really build those friendships when an internship is virtual.

The leadership and staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and invested in our success.

What I wish was different

I wish there were less technical issues and we had more time to work with the software.

Advice

Go out of your way to network with individuals and build relationships. Set up times to meet with staff and leaders during your work day, be curious, and ask a lot of questions! They are there to help.

Tax and Audit Intern

June - August 2019 • Westwood, CA

What I liked

Given the opportunity to get experience in both the tax and audit positions. Being able to do actual work in both fields and being treated as an actual employee. I enjoyed the fact that the internship was both work and fun. We were given the opportunity to network with the all of the staff from that office and other offices. We got to have lunch with partners, managers, seniors, and staff. Got to understand how the firm works and what we can expect how our life will be when working there full time.

What I wish was different

I enjoyed the internship very much and was able to get a good amount of work to do. There was also good amount of down time but it was the summer and I understand how there is not much work for us to do during that short period of time.

Advice

It is very important to take advantage of this opportunity by networking with all the professionals there and not being shy to ask questions and network. Connect with the other interns as well as those will be the people who will start with. I made many friends during this internship of students I went to school with but had no idea that they went to the same school as me.

Rotational Accounting Intern

June - July 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Great exposure to all facets of public accounting firm: audit, tax, consulting. Worked on a variety of different projects all involved in innovation in the industry. Connected with and got to know many different professionals within the firm and lots of coffee talks with senior managers and partners.

What I wish was different

Longer internship.

Advice

Have an open mind about what you want in a career in a public accounting firm. There are many different roles and positions. Also, connect with as many professionals as possible during an internship, as they will be valuable connections in the future.

Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

The company culture is very inclusive and encouraging. There was a lot of task variety, and different projects that we were able to work on. The intern training at Disneyland was a ton of fun.

What I wish was different

I would have liked some more feedback on my performance throughout the internship.

Advice

I would suggest that future interns look to be involved in as many ways as possible. You only get as much as you put into the experience.

Audit Intern

June - August 2019 • Campbell, CA

What I liked

I got to do testing for corporate audits at several tech companies as well as work on employee benefit plan audits for companies in several different industries. The variety of clients Moss Adams exposes interns to is really special and is not something interns at Big 4 tend to have.

What I wish was different

I wish we had on the job training with multiple interns together shadowing one audit team. This would have made the transition from training lectures to on the job learning with audit seniors easier and would have been good to hear some of the questions other interns have on the same client.

Advice

Ask questions especially when it feels dumb to ask. There really are no “dumb” questions.

Accounting Tax Intern

June - August 2019 • Spokane, WA

What I liked

The people were incredibly friendly and so excited to help me get started on my career. Moss Adams set me up with a buddy (an employee who had just gone through the internship process a few years before) and a career advisor (a higher level employee who could answer some of my questions about career paths). I loved the people I worked with and they made the environment so welcoming. We had training in Disneyland for a week and got to meet and network interns from across the country as well as professionals. We also got to do a scavenger hunt and have a free day in Disneyland with all the interns. This created a great foundation for the rest of internship. The staff were so helpful with assisting us with tax returns and explaining different software programs. The work was challenging but very useful for understanding how to complete tax returns.

What I wish was different

Because of the seasonality of tax returns, there were mainly only large, more complicated returns to work on. There were some slow days with very little work. I know we could have gotten more experience with tax returns if we interned in the winter season instead of the summer when the work flow is slower.

Advice

Get to know as many people as you can during your internship. I learned so much from partners and staff. Also, do as much with your coworkers outside of work as well, get lunch or coffee with people. I joined the company's softball team and it was a blast! This was also the best way I got to know people and this was a good foundation for asking to get lunch or coffee with people.

Financial Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I loved the hands on experience that this internship provided. I spent at least 3 days a week out in the field at a client site. I did actual work that added value to the audit engagement. Additionally, the people were extremely welcoming and super helpful in times where I had questions about specific engagements or about public accounting in general.

What I wish was different

Sometimes I Felt like I was out in the field too much. Although this is great for experience, I wish I was in the office a little more to feel out the culture of the company.

Advice

I would say don’t stress. I was so nervous that I would mess up or people would judge me, but there is so much training and help available for interns. There is no reason to stress out during this internship. I would also say, don’t worry about the actual work a ton. I realized that talking and networking with people is how you decide if you would be a good fit for a company.
