What I liked

I enjoyed the relaxed flow of work and the freedom to participate in multiple projects.

What I wish was different

Advice

This experience was very self-motivated. The work you want to put in is the outcome of your experience at MITRE. As someone who enjoys their freedom, it was an enjoyable time, but take this freedom with caution.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • McLean, VA

What I liked

The hours were nice (getting to leave at 4:30) and the work was with a purpose and relatively interesting.

What I wish was different

I wish interns had been seated with the teams, being stuck in an office alone was not fun. I also would have preferred to wear casual clothes as the job is in tech, but instead you have to wear business casual.

Advice

Make sure to spend a lot of time with whoever your mentor is/teammates are if you can, otherwise you may get bored.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Bedford, MA

What I liked

There is so much cool stuff going on at the company, and my team was really fun to be around.

What I wish was different

Provided housing or a stiipend would've been nice, but finding housing worked out fine for me

Advice

They'll fly/drive you there if you get an interview, just ask! Also, when you're there, ask around for more projects you can do if you'd like other things to work on.

Drone/UAV Design Intern

May 2018 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the hands on experience. I was able to design, prototype, build, and manufacture all of my components on my own. I had enough help to make sure that I didn't get stuck, but was mostly able to work on my own, which helped me grow. It was overall a great experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been connected to more people in the area. It was fairly hard to find things to do outside of work.

Advice

If you like prototyping and building things yourself, this is an amazing experience.

What I liked

It definitely gave me a good look on what jobs in the tech field are like, specifically in relation to government consulting. Also, the company was very nice. I liked everyone I worked with, they perform some very fulfilling work, and have a really nice campus with good food.

Systems Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • McLean, VA

What I liked

The welcoming working environment. Everyone was helpful and they taught me a lot of new skills.

What I wish was different

I wish the company provided more networking activities with other employees like a company-wide potluck picnic.

Advice

It's a great experience. Dont forget about your connections. Its not always about what you know, but rather who you know.

Software Development Intern

June - August 2018 • Bedford, MA

What I liked

I liked the open lab workspace, and getting hands on experience working on a software project. Being in an open lab made it easy to also see what co-workers in my department and other departments were working on too.

What I wish was different

Perhaps more structure for the work I did.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions at an internship, you are not expected to know everything as a student. Meeting people and expanding your network is also an important part of internships, so go to intern events and events held by the company whenever possible.

Cyber Security Intern

June - August 2018 • McLean, VA

What I liked

The flexibility and work environment at MITRE is very nice. Interns are able to work with full-time employees to learn and help on projects. This internship is all about using the resources available at MITRE and I was able to enjoy intern events while working on an interesting project.

What I wish was different

I wish that MITRE institute classes were available over the summer in-person. I wasn't able to attend any sessions and my only wish is that there were more classes available to attend in-person rather than online.

Advice

Take advantage of the resources given: resume building workshops, hackathons, cyber defense competition, etc.

Cyber Security Intern

May 2015 • McLean, VA

What I liked

The team I worked with was amazing and extremely knowledgable. They were helpful in guiding me towards solutions but also trusting enough to let me lead my own projects and implement things as I saw fit. They allowed me to interact with the government sponsors we support and see the impact of my work.

What I wish was different

I wish they had subsidized housing.

Advice

Searching for housing far in advance and be prepared to wait during the interview/offer process.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • McLean, VA

What I liked

MITRE has super flexible work hours. You basically decide when you want to come in given that you don't have any meetings or presentations and you're allowed to work from home. My intern advisor was a UVa alumna and she went out of her way to make sure the interns got to experience what the company has to offer, which is important when you're working somewhere so large.

What I wish was different

I wish that the office had been more lively. Since it was summer and employees can work from home or need to travel, there were days when I felt like I was the only one on my hall. However, this is probably an issue at multiple companies.

Advice

I would say that you should try to learn and experience as much as possible within the company. I took advantage of field trips to museums, a cyber security tournament (where interns had to defend against career hackers), movie nights, and speakers from different engineering fields. Just ask around and see what's going on.
