My coworkers are great! I really enjoy making social media content and other marketing materials for the department. I also enjoy working with the behind-the-scenes data for Student Well-Being's various programs, including STEP UP!

IT Media Services Producer

May 2019 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

I enjoy being a part of the major impact distance classes can make. On any given day, I am making sure 50+ students are getting access to a class they would not otherwise be able to attend. The teamwork within the department is pretty good, and the hours tend to be pretty flexible if you need some time off.

Advice

If you want to work for ITMS, please recognize that our small department is not the stereotypical IT office. We work with computers, but we aren't messing with the backend. We use VNCs, Online Meeting Services, and remote recorders and cameras to do a lot of work. It isn't coding. It isn't programming. It's using end-user software to accomplish a goal with as little effort from the client as possible.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

January 2020 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

I liked the freedom of getting to work when I wanted to over the summer but also still having project deadlines and responsibilities. I also liked being able to take a course over the summer and have enough time to focus on both and research.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more people engaged in research. The progress for my project was slow because not many students stayed in Rolla over the summer for research (largely due to COVID).

Advice

Talk to professors to get involved in research! Most are always accepting extra help and are very helpful to get you started if you put in effort.

Summer Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

Working with new students every week was a blast and it is amazing getting to see what the next generation of engineers has in store.

What I wish was different

The job involves several different groups working to keep the camp running, these groups often have different guidelines and expectations for students and the contradictions were a mess at times.

Advice

The job is enjoyable but it is demanding living in the same place where you work, make sure you take time to focus on yourself once in a while or you risk burning out.

Research Experience for Undergraduates in Additive Manufacturing

June - August 2017 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

It was a cool experience, each student chose their own topic to research in additive manufacturing, and work with a grad student and faculty advisor. You got research experience which broadened my view of engineering applications, or what you can do with your degree. Another highlight of this experience was that we got to travel to national labs and companies (oak ridge natl labs, & Reinshaw), as well as present our research at the international solid freeform fabrication symposium in Austin TX.
