Clinical and Translational Science Intern

June - August 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the research I conducted with Angela Backus, MS in the Graduate School Office of Biomedical Sciences. My project was much different than the lab bench science exposure I've had as an undergraduate. In this role I did more administrative work and organization, which was a nice change and I feel definitely provided me with the ability to be more versatile.

What I wish was different

The only change I would have liked was the internship to be a little bit longer

Advice

This experience gave me more exposure to different levels and areas of research in the Biomedical field. The accessibility of creating networks and building your personal credentials was amazing!

SPUR Participant

May - August 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I liked the independent work given. Allowed to develop habits that can be reproduced in any job title. Definitely helped build presentation and critical thinking skills. Great insight into a research environment if interested in the field.

What I wish was different

The overall lab experience was exceptional! The program itself is very insightful in higher level education opportunities. Although, could have facilitated a better networking within the participants.

Advice

Always be open to different interests outside your established likings, may help with networking and discovering new likings.

Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I loved being able to live on campus. I was apart of the Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) and they treated us very highly. We were able to go out on a catered boat to Michigan Lake with the Dean and many other professors and talk about our research and make contacts. The research itself was thrilling as well, which included weekly symposiums and being fully immersed in the area of research.

What I wish was different

Wish I would've drove my own car there instead of flying. Would've allowed me to explore the city more while I was there.

Advice

If you are interested in research, I would highly look for a SPUR program or of one similar. It allowed me to become fully immersed in the life of research, make great contacts, and also made great friends and memories. It allowed me to realize that the MD/PhD that I was looking at, wasn't for me. Which is okay, because without this experience I would've still been wondering if I should have taken that path.

Undergraduate Researcher

May - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I loved the lab I was assigned to. My mentors in the programme still serve as mentors to me and are always checking up on me. It was also a glimpse into what it would be like to do research all day, every day - a glimpse into what graduate school or a career in research could look like.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more opportunities to get to know the other people in the programme with me. By the time we finally got around to meeting each other, our time at the programme was almost up.

Advice

If you are someone considering a career in research, or any other scientific field, I would recommend a summer research experience. It opened me up to the prospects of academic medicine as opposed topurely clinical medicine.

Summer Program Undergraduate Research

May - August 2017 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

The hands-on research was just what I needed to get experience in the field I plan to go in to.

What I wish was different

I would change absolutely nothing- I loved every aspect, from the lab I was in, the people I worked with, the students in the program, the lecture series, to the city I got to live in.

Advice

Stay curious and stay persistent- you are not expected to have all of the answers. Just keep an open mind and show up to work every day with an eager mind.
