Nurse Technician
July 2020 • Rochester, MN
What I liked
I loved the learning environment and the willingness of all staff to teach and promote education. The opportunists that presented themselves for self growth and continuation of learning are never ending. There is a large support system and the organization is highly adaptable to change and using new evidence based practice.
What I wish was different
As with everything else, COVID had an impact and shortened my experience. I would have liked if there were even more learning experiences. The role has transitioned into a member of the staff team and I act as a PCA with more responsibilities/abilities.
Advice
Try your hardest to get into this role. This offers an amazing experience and entry into Mayo.

Registered Nurse
August 2018 • Rochester, MN
What I liked
I have enjoyed direct patient care. I was able to work for a year on a Progressive Care Unit, and then decided to transfer to the clinic side of things. It has been a great opportunity to find out what I like about my role in Nursing.
What I wish was different
Nursing in the hospital setting can be overwhelming. Working in an acute care setting, sometimes my workload seemed heavy if I had 3-5 patients who all needed a lot of care.
Advice
That even though the job you are starting may seem overwhelming you can learn a lot of skills and you can grow into becoming more proficient within your role. I found that asking for help is completely acceptable while you are starting out and are facing challenges you were not previously familiar with. Talking it out to a coworker can help you both see the solution pretty quickly.
