Mastercard

Intern, Information Security Operations

June - August 2018 • O'Fallon, MO

What I liked

The internship experience was outstanding! I was given real work assignments and allowed to work in two departments on two teams (received a promotion). We had an orientation and weekly presentations by key executives in many departments. Some presentations were presented by executives in other countries or regions. I was one of 75 interns from around the world, and each of us served in a different business unit. We had a community service project and numerous intern networking opportunities. My roommate was from Turkey, and I learned a tremendous amount about the differences in the U.S. and other cultures this summer. Also, Mastercard gave us a signing bonus and arranged for low-cost housing.

What I wish was different

I loved the internship experience. The only big problem I had was finding things to do on the weekends. O'Fallon is 30 miles outside of St. Louis, and it is mostly highways and strip shopping centers. The businesses and restaurants close at 8 p.m. each night. There are no buses or low-cost transportation to St. Louis. When I could go with other interns who had cars, I had a wonderful time exploring the area. However, if I needed things from Walmart, I had to walk 13 miles to get supplies.

Advice

Mastercard is great about offering internships to students who excel in many different business areas. They pay very well and are supportive of their interns. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and one that allowed me to grow and thrive.

What I liked

I loved interacting with the scholars and the other program assistants. I got to appreciate first hand a lot of the organising that goes into the MasterCard foundation scholars program

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more engaged earlier because it took me a while to start feeling it and I feel like I missed a lot of great opportunities to have fun

Always reach out to people. Even if they look like they don't need help you should check on them and make sure that they are okay. Showing genuine concern takes nothing from you
