Lowe's Store

Retail Stocker

January - August 2018 • Greenville, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed the friendships that I made there. I also liked that I learned to operate many pieces of machinery.

What I wish was different

I honest wish I received maybe $1+ more per hour.

Advice

You have to understand that retail is very difficult because of all the human to human interaction. Do not take it personal if you get yelled at for something you could not control.

Cashier

May 2018 • Erie, PA

What I liked

I loved working with people, and I loved that each shift was different.

What I wish was different

I wish the communication in the store had been better. It was difficult to do my job when other people were not doing there's.

Advice

Don't let little things get to you. As a cashier, you will have a lot of negative interactions with people, and you have to brush them off in order to stay sane.

Customer service associate

July 2017 • Alliance, OH

What I liked

Learning skills that will help later in life when becoming independent in your own home.

What I wish was different

The managorial leadership is very unorganized and the idea of "teamwork" is used as a scapegoat to keep the store understaffed.

Advice

Have a lot of patience, ask questions, never let the customers get to you.

Cashier

March - August 2018 • York, PA

What I liked

It was a good position, and it was great to learn how a Lowe's store is ran. I met some very interesting people along the way and the job is fairly easy for the good hourly wage.

What I wish was different

Variation of the job and a little bit more training. Especially if you are not familiar with a lot of building materials, there is a small learning curve.

Advice

Sometimes you need a nice job on the side that will pay the bills. Lowe's cashier positions offer a good hourly wage and plenty of hours to accommodate individuals who want a higher inflow of cash.

Lumber Sales Associate

September 2019 • Soda Springs, ID

What I liked

I found the work rewarding. It is a pretty close group to work with where most all of the employees work towards the success of the entire store. The compensation is fair and they are willing to work with a reasonable schedule.

What I wish was different

I wish they would do scheduling differently- this is pretty common most places though.

Advice

To not be afraid to speak up about being over scheduled

Sales

May - August 2019 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

It wasn't too hard, time went by fast, pay was good, possibly longer lunch breaks (depending on shift's hours), flexible schedule.

What I wish was different

More people on the weekends, not putting new people on closing shift alone 3 days into the job, a little bit more flexibilty when finding out you need a day off after the 3 week previous alert limit.

Advice

Be ready for just about anything (swarm of customers, angry or frustrated customers, basically anything) and to do all you can to keep a welcoming appearance to customers and employees.

Sales Associate

May 2018 - August 2019 • Rosenberg, TX

What I liked

My favorite part of the job was working directly with my customers as well as using my knowledge to help my co-workers come up with safe, quick, and more efficient solutions to problems.

What I wish was different

I wish that my most recent Summer would have been as busy, if not, more busy than my first Summer while I was working for Lowe's Home Improvement; I enjoyed the challenge of being pushed to my intellectual limits during my first Summer there. I learned more about the company and more importantly about myself as to how well I work under pressure among other personal qualities whenever I was most busy. I was able to practice my leadership skills by taking charge of situations that involved obtaining the right product(s) for my customers.

Advice

By using my personal skills while working at Lowe's, I developed such a great passion for my job that customers who knew nothing about me aside from what they read on my name-tag would occasionally ask me, "Are you an Engineer?" or something similar; I would usually ask them why they would ask such questions or how they knew that I was an Engineering student. Their usual response would be something like, "Because of how well you come up with solutions/ideas." or "Because you are so good at math." or "Because of how well you talk." or "Because of how you carry yourself." or answers that were similar. My advice would be for one not to limit their skills to a specific job they are working towards but to use their skills to the best of their ability in every job they get hired for whether it relates to their desired future career or not.

Seasonal Sales Associate

June - August 2019 • West Des Moines, IA

What I liked

It was great to get "real" work experience--it felt like I had a better idea of what it would be like to work after college, since the majority of my co-workers were non-students.

What I wish was different

I'm a bit worried about how this experience will feed into my future career interests, so I wish I had taken more time beforehand to consider the way that this position will fit into my career path.

Advice

It's a really good job if you haven't worked full time or haven't worked very much full-time before. As long as you are attentive, polite, and responsible, you probably won't face any serious issues working here.

Check Out Cashier

May - August 2018 • Brighton, CO

What I liked

I loved the employees and their different personalities and how welcoming they are to everyone. Not only do they help the customers find what they need but build not only professional relationships but create friendships with the customers .

What I wish was different

The short staffed days where it would get crazy busy and we didn't have enough people to help out in each department.

Advice

Although the pace is fast customers are understanding and as long as you stay positive the day will go by fast.
