Lowe's Store

Lowe's Associate

June - August 2020 • Little Elm, TX

What I liked

I liked being able to learn new things. I personally had no experience with paint. After my experience working at Lowe's, I would say I now know a lot about paint and colors.

What I liked

This was my second summer working at Lowe's, so I appreciated the camaraderie between employees and the general willingness of longstanding employees to help each other out. The clientele were all relatively well-intentioned, and made their appreciation for your services clear. The most rewarding feeling is exceeding their expectations in terms of customer service, and leaving them feeling eager to return for their next project.

What I wish was different

I wish Lowe's did more to vet their hires, especially during the summer when the store is practically run by seasonal employees. The fall off between competent employees and those who just aren't willing to work or learn was really clear. The other thing that was particularly challenging was Lowe's cart retrieval process. There were 8+ different types of carts, many with similar purposes and each going to a different part of the store. Customers who began shopping at one end of the store and checked out at the other would move single-purpose carts to the extreme other end of the parking lot. Different cart types don't stack together properly, but they never bothered to phase out the old carts when new types came in. Additionally, while all cashiers were hired with the same responsibilities only the able-bodied ones were tasked with cart retrieval. It was all done by hand, since there was no machine to push it forward like many neighboring stores have.

Advice

It is a worthwhile experience, and the pay makes it an excellent summer job. It worked well with my summer classes, since scheduling is all based around your availability. But you have to be ready and willing to learn on the job and perfect your craft, or it will never get easier.

Sales

May - August 2019 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

It wasn't too hard, time went by fast, pay was good, possibly longer lunch breaks (depending on shift's hours), flexible schedule.

What I wish was different

More people on the weekends, not putting new people on closing shift alone 3 days into the job, a little bit more flexibilty when finding out you need a day off after the 3 week previous alert limit.

Advice

Be ready for just about anything (swarm of customers, angry or frustrated customers, basically anything) and to do all you can to keep a welcoming appearance to customers and employees.

May 2019 • Boise, ID

What I liked

Once you learn the old system they use it's a fairly easy job. It's a friendly environment to work in and the coworkers are amazing! Along with this the assistant managers are great with working with school schedules.

What I wish was different

Like most stores, this Lowe's has had some struggle with being low on staff. That can make things a bit tricky (scheduling/break wise) but the assistant managers try their best to fill those needed positions up.

Advice

Show up on time, tend to the regular cashier duties, and be sure to talk with the assistant managers if you have any problems. It's a great job to have if you yourself are a good employee.
